We've visited this store before but we thought we'd get another look at it for those of you who haven't yet gotten up the courage to venture inside...
Although we live within walking distance of Nick Metropolis, we've only ever driven past it. Seems like many people we know have done the same, intimidated by its hodge-podge of iconic pieces (both real and knock-offs) with an emphasis on the kitschier side of the scale and general air of benign neglect. But it's definitely worth a stop...
LA Store: Nick Metropolis
Los Angeles
Located on a stretch of LaBrea, just south of Beverly Boulevard, that houses some of LA's finest furniture stores (Craig Olsen, Landon Cole, American Rag's Maison Midi are within walking distance), many of which we'll be revisiting in the next few weeks, Nick is the wild, rebellious child among its more sedate and orderly siblings. It carries many unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that wouldn't be out of place in the Playboy Mansion or Angelyne's pink palace.
Looking for an oversized architectural element, a carousel horse perhaps or an old filling station sign? Likelihood is you'll find it here. How about a painting, so bad it's good? Tucked here and there though, you'll find a few pieces you'll want to incorporate into your less dramatic decor. Billing himself as "The King of Collectable Furniture," Nick's a junker who lives under a rainbow. He often gets lucky and you're the beneficiary whether of a good laugh or a find. We were surprised to learn that not all the pieces are over-the-top. Here are some more sedate pieces we spied from the day we were there...
A website is in the works. Meanwhile, if you missed the Rosebowl, but you're looking for a little bit of that serendipitous charm mixed with a touch of "Viva Las Vegas" and a dash of screwball comedy, stop here. You might just have a good chuckle or you might come home grinning from ear to ear

Nick is the SWEETEST man in all of Los Angeles! His stuff really is fantastic and you can find bargains all over his giant shop. It's not a 5 minute place.... I've spent 2 hours at a time wandering (and climbing, and crawling) around his palace. You must go and see it if you haven't already... I'm sure there's something there that will catch your eye!

I found a beautiful teak chair hidden under some crazy stuff. Love that place!

I found tons of one-of-a-kind pieces I loved but couldn't take with me back to my tiny NYC studio loft. Not to mention that most of what Nick sells can be classified as "carry on."

I went here once a few years ago...there was lot's of cool stuff but most of it was covered with a thick layer of dirt and dust, probably from the car exhaust of La Brea. Most pieces seemed kind of over-priced for their condition.
