Jim Austin's Urban Desert Ranch
LA Times Home & Garden 7/17/08

atla-071708-latimes.jpgToday's Los Angeles Times Home and Garden feature story is the desert canyon home of musician and surf wear entrepreneur Jim Austin. It's a perfect fit for Green Month here at AT, fusing desert style and urban design with a eye towards living harmoniously and consciously in a climate where the temperatures can swing from boiling to freezing in the same month, even in the same day. More pics after the jump...

A modern light-filled home shaded by a steel canopy, Rimrock Ranch seems like a very urban home for such a wild environment. Part house, part performance space, it's sheltered from the sun by a steel canopy that fends off the sun during the day and captures the rising heat at night. As architect Lloyd Russell puts it, "There are two times in a day when it's 70 degrees. We designed the house to be at that temperature at all times."
