LA Times H&G 07.12.07 "His look? Totally Rad"

"English Dandy collides with California Skater." That's how the feature article in yesterday's LA Times House & Garden section describes the Hancock Park home of Johnson Hartig, one half of the design team that create the fashion line Libertine (which debuts it's line for Target this weekend).

Hartig renovated a 1920's country cottage style house. He says "I wanted to turn it into a simple loft-like space- white, clean and open- then decorate it with art as the focus." And it's his eclectic art and antiques that really make the space unique. A big fan of Damien Hirst, he has several Hirst pieces as dominant focal points throughout the space. We especially love his sense of humor that is injected in every room. (Note the champagne bottle above the tub.)

Bad-ass! This is the kind of design that really inspires me: one with a unique perspective that oozes bold personal style. (Not something you'd expect to see in the moneyed Hancock Park neighborhood...) When I think of contemporary L.A. style, something as bright, eclectic and brash as this is what comes to mind.

House Beautiful magazine ran a feature on Hartig's home a few years ago. I loved it, it was the first celebrity home that really intrigued and inspired me... I saved clippings of some of the photos in my design scrapbook. the new home is just as fabulous!

I have to say that as a kid growing up in Venice I loved the spinart booth at the local carnivals.

I just found out I still have a softspot in my heart for spinart.
It feels like a visual presentation of the "wall of sound".

The house has a playfulness that shine through each and every single room.
