LA TIMES H&G: Edward H. Fickett

Eichler, Cliff May, Neutra, Craig Ellwod, Pierre Koenig... All popular mid-century icons, but Edward H.Fickett? This week's LA Times Home and Garden features a an enlightening article by Sean Mitchell about one of LA's own Modernist architects that never reached the public prestige as the others. However, he was one of the most prolific, designing over 60,000 houses by one estimate, and 10,000 in San Fernando Valley alone. The article goes into some of Fickett's history, as well as exploring reasons why he never reached the acclaim of his contemporaries.

Fickett also designed the Tower Records store on Sunset Boulevard, the Los Angeles Police Academy, hundreds of apartment buildings, the Original Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, and he also pioneered the cantilevering of tennis courts. There is also a great slide show online of one of his homes recently restored by Rich Stulson and his partner Mike Vollman. A fascinating read and an important reminder to preserve and appreciate these unsung heroes that have shaped our local landscape.

I'm so glad LAT did an article on the Fickett homes. It was a very informative piece; and the images of the featured home's luxe updates were great. I'd consider a move to the valley if I were able to own one of these gems. Maybe. (Big maybe.)
