LA Times Home & Garden Roundup 01.31.09
Los Angeles

13009-lat01.jpgWhat's your fantasy living space? If we had our druthers, we'd live in a loft in an up and coming neighborhood in some city's downtown. This week's Los Angeles Times Home and Garden section looks at some fantasy homes that have become reality for their owners, from a house in La Canada/Flintridge to a loft in LA's Chinatown to the portfolio of the Obama's interior decorator, Michael S. Smith. More, pics and links, after the jump...

13009-lat02.jpgA Ranch House in La Canada/Flintridge is remodeled with warmth and restraint: Attention to detail doesn't have to mean foregoing comfort and livability. Here, a home evokes a midcentury vibe and is filled with beautiful things but is still casual, comfortable and free of ostentation, the ideal mix for many of us.

13009-lat03.jpgLOC Architect's Chinatown Remodel: Join two apartments, create an outdoor dining room and plunk it down in the middle of LA's Chinatown and what do you get? A great loft in a great neighborhood that we'd be happy to live in.

13009-lat04.jpgHomemade cleaners get the job done This week you learned how to use bread to clean your wallpaper of fingerprints and how to make your own cleaning wipes. Susan Carpenter weighs in on making your own cleaning products and retraining your nose to the new smell of clean.

13009-lat05.jpgThese aren't your mama's stools: Whether you're having a crowd over for the Superbowl or dinner, extra seating is a necessity. Here are some stylish options.

13009-lat06.jpgMichael S. Smith' Houses: A peek inside a new book that details the portfolio of the new White House designer, Santa Monica-based Michael S. Smith and his eclectic sensibility.

13009-lat07.jpgWhen you're cold, curl up in front of these fire screens: Chilly nights demand a fire. Here are some ways to enjoy it without getting burned by flying embers.

I liked the house. It's a bit expansive for "restraint" but really nice. I liked how they got it in 16, instead of the 30-40 pictures most AT "house tour" applicants take of their teeny-tiny apartments.
