With Sarah Palin's rumoured appearance on Saturday Night Live tonight, it seems that Halloween's playful "trick or treat" spirit is already in the air, a welcome respite from the nail biting caused by the stock market and the Presidential race. There's a playful bent to this week's Los Angeles Times Home & Garden section too; the featured home, a restored Spanish Revival in Echo Park, includes a full Tiki Bar in the basement; there's a roundup of the goth Halloween-themed accessories we've been noticing that can decorate a home year round; and The Scout features a new store on Fairfax that whose aesthetic has been described by the owner as "granny on psychedelics." Links, pics and more, after the jump...

Lightening Up A Spanish Revival Bungalow. The home belonging to Alan Smart and his partner, Michael Uhlenkott, is decorated in a lightened up version of the classic Spanish Revival style. Perhaps not unexpectedly, given that Smart's the Emmy-nominated director of SpongeBob Squarepants, it also has a distinctly zany side. Note the Tiki bar in the basement. If this home's your style, don't forget to check out the list of resources.
Halloween: The Spooky-Chic Season Perhaps it's the generally somber mood of the last few weeks that has the Goth overtones of Halloween feeling appropriate beyond the holiday but, depending on your decor, and your sense of humour, as Grace pointed out many of these pieces can work year round.
Christmas-Halloween mash Perhaps in the recognition that Halloween's the second biggest decorating "season" after Christmas, many decorations now merge the two sensibilities and include Halloween lights, ornaments and wreaths.
Modernist Architecture: feeling the pinch too? If the stock market's ups and down haven't affected you and you've always wanted a mid-century home, now might be the time you've been waiting for.
The Scout A store on Fairfax the owner describes as "granny on psychedlics;" designer Kenneth Wingrad goes retail; Artecnica opens a showroom in West Hollywood (which Laure got a look at it); and an upcoming gallery opening features the beautiful and disturbing photographs of Wiliam Curtis Rolf.
Reviving a Greene & Greene ClassicTwo new exhibitions, one at the Pasadena Museum of California Art and the other at the Huntington Gardens, Art Collections and Botanical Garden, spotlight the work of Arts & Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene, perhaps best known for the Gamble house.

Is that an original Thomas Hart Benton painting in the first picture?

I've seen a lot of "Christmas Lights" but in orange for Halloween.

Palin undoubtedly despises anyone who actually reads this website as being insufficiently pro-American. If you're this easily hoodwinked by a appearance on SNL, the Gods help us all.

Trilobyte--don't project. It's unbecoming and stupid. You have no idea about Palin's taste in websites.
I think The Scout has worn out his welcome. He's not all that innovative, and often posts about places that everyone else knows about already. Too bad his art and travel show tanked.

Palmetto on Trilobyte: burrrrrrrrrned!
Modernist houses from 12 million to 9!? Awesome! Let me see if I have some spare change lying around...These tough times sure did put a dent on my budget. I promised myself not to go above 10.
