LA Times House & Garden 3.29.07

Looking Beyond Green. That was the headline for yesterday's LA Times House&Garden feature on the newly built home of Bob Beitcher and his wife Carol in Santa Monica. The key point about the design is that it doesn't scream "Eco friendly" but rather, the primary thing is that the house has "an architecturally interesting design, and the punch line is that it's got all these sustainable design features."

The house is another example of a new generation of "green" homes that are sleek and modern, and is "more than a soapbox." We are loving the use of the amber bamboo flooring on the ceiling!

With an estimated construction cost of $310 per square foot for a 4000 SF house on a prime Westside lot, I guess money CAN buy you taste... This is the kind of LA Times coverage that is so uninteresting to me because the home is so out of reach for most Times readers. Add to that, the owner's cloying quote "The primary thing is that the house has an architecturally interesting design, and the punch line is that it's got all these sustainable design features." Ugh! Pure. Aspiriational. Design. Porn. With only the slightest nod to de rigeur Westside leftie leanings... As if to say, "Look at us, we're green, not granola... More beluga, dear?" [Don't mind me. Just a slight case of sour grapes since I'll never come close to owning something like this.]

Saw it at during the CA BOOM house tour. Place is fabulous. The owner worked hard, made the money and could afford something a whole lot bigger, splashy and irresponsible. Good for him.
