Lateral File Cabinet: Finding The One That Works

123 lat.file.jpgWe have been helping a friend set up her swanky new office and once again have come to the problem of finding good lateral file cabinets, which tend to be a real thud in an office. They are either very pricey, like the one at Restoration hardware ($2500), or to flimsy, like the "fine-on-a-budget"
Effektiv from Ikea
($165)

Our winner is the 1-2-3 Lateral File ($345) at Hold Everything. The shape and price are better than their
Mix 'n Match file
, and we are hoping that lining up a few of these will create a more of a sideboard feeling in her otherwise hectic workspace.

Another good option is the Linear Searies at Room and Board. A lateral file cabinet made of maple, cherry or walnut would cost $999 with natural steel hardware and $1099 with stainless steel hardware. I looked everywhere for some good office storage that didn't look too officy (is that a word?) and finally settled on this which I love.

I really like the Bisley files, but I'm not sure how much their lateral files are. They are really well made and quite streamlined.

How about a used office furniture store? We got a 4-drawer 42" Steelcase for about $400. Of course, we're in Cleveland, but the used office furniture route should be viable elsewhere. Of course, it's a slightly dented Steelcase, so the it might not fit with all decor.
