One of the great parts about summer is that if you have any garden or balcony at all, your living space can expand outside into the warm nights. We love the ambiance created by all these hanging red lanterns and we're thinking of using the idea for our next outdoor gathering.

Not only is red flattering on any skin tone, but it casts such a magical glow at dusk (red light district connotations aside) that all we can think about is living inside a Wong Kar Wai film, surrounded by lanterns.
Find a healthy selection of lanterns on paper lantern store, shoji decor and luna bazaar.
Lovely photographs.

Anyone know eher I could find these types of lanterns (in a waterproof material and with outdoor-safe electrics) that are safe for a balcony that gets wet?

I recently purchased some lanterns from paperlanternstore.com. I got the nylon versions instead of the paper so they would be more weatherproof, and this weekend I rigged solar lighting on the inside and hung them. They let off a subtle glow; it's nice. The site also sells battery powered lights made specifically for lanterns, so you could always light them that way. Supposed to get like a 40 hour life out of the battery, which is pretty good as long as you remember to turn them off when you're not outside! I'm going to post an instructable soon on the solar rigging, I'll post a link when I get that up.
