Skina Outdoor Lights from Ikea

Okay okay, we admit it. We're a sucker for fairy lights. Especially outside. Perhaps it's reading too many Victorian novels at an impressionable age but there'll always be something magical for us in the combination of dark night and twinkling lights, even if the twinkle comes from a bulb rather than the night sky

Ikea's collection of outdoor lights, Skina, promises to bring some magic to long summer nights spent outdoors with friends, lingering over drinks after barbequed dinners. We especially like the outdoor chandelier. That it's battery operated is only more enticing.

I work at IKEA, and from far away they look reasonable but up close they are pretty tacky looking, even for me :).

Though, if you plan on getting smashed, they probably look lovely!

My three year old daughter fell in love with one and they were on sale for 2 Euro, so I had no real reason to say no. The on/off switch in encased in the battery compartment so we had to cut a hole to be able to turn it on/off without taking it apart every time. Then when we actually do turn it off, it doesn't go off, just dim.

As long as you keep your childlike magical view of it, enjoy it. I hope you have like-minded friends to enjoy it with you. Don't mind the comments here about how tacky it is---it really is---and stick to your guns. . . .

Faerie lights are actually something quite different--Victorian glass tschotches consisting of a candle holder base with a glass shade. Here's a link to a fairly standard example on eBay:
