Up with Light: Using Can Lights on the Floor

081707_canlight.jpg

Uplighting is usually reserved for things like stage productions of As You Like It, trees outside of a country club, and the only memorable scene from the Blair Witch Project.

However, CB2 would like us to start integrating this lighting concept into our homes with these can lights. You can tuck them behind sofas and tables to light up corners and walls. Added bonus? You just created a swank shadow puppet theater!

The arrangement they show -- uplighting branches -- is extremely helpful for adding visual interest when you have boring walls with no architectural detailing.

We've been carrying around three cannister lights from Gracious Home in NYC for 7 years now, and that's the best use I've found for them.

I've seen these for sale in many areas and often not for much ($10-12 or so). I can see many great ways to use them in the home. I have always liked what up lighting does be it from below or up hight, letting the light bounce off the ceiling (especially if white).

Used in conjunction with other lighting, can help bring a dramatic stance to an otherwise "ordinary" room.

I built something similar to go behind our ginormous tv. it's a long wooden box with lights pointing up so the nook the tv fits in gets a bit of light. works great.

Oh my god...I was just thinking about my old uplight lamps from Ikea (mid-90's). I missed them last night since I need uplights for my floor plants that use flourescent bulbs (to go with my other "daylight" flc bulbs).

I'm going to put in an order for these soon...
