apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Elisa's Red, White and Cozy

We're big fans of soft, moody lighting which is exactly what Elisa's living room serves up. A large, open space that includes a dining area (and some fabulous home decor inspiration).

The large, red velvet couch is an instant pop of color that works great in the large space. The contrasting color of red and white helps to section off the dining area while keeping the space open and airy. The position of the couch also helps ground the space--acting as a focal point for our eyes to land. Elisa balances out the pops of red with white walls and accent tables. You'll also find hints of black in the living room, showing up in a pair of chairs and artwork hung on the wall.

Thank you, jpovarchook, that was driving me crazy. I'd say you got it:

Elisa, I love your beautiful home! Could you tell me the name of the paint color you used on the walls?

I like! Do any of you know the name of that plant behind her couch?

Yeah SFU! I recognized the coat of arms instantly! Never thought of putting it on my walls, but it is certainly permanently in my brain!

I also like the sofa and restrained color palette. I think the living room would look even richer with a rug, maybe something in a graphic black and white or beige pattern to tie the color scheme together.

Lovely room - tho I wish the red chair were angled into the room rather than flat against the wall...
...and that just a bit of the red was carried into the dining area - perhaps a ceramic bowl as a centerpiece, a red table runner or piece of art with some red in it replacing the blue map.

thanks! the paint color is just behr "decorator's white" from home depot and the plant is a fiddle leaf fig... yup, i managed to find two vintage framed posters of both an SFU crest and a UVic crest in the basement of the UBC Alumni house that i used to work at and was allowed to keep them!

i have been on the hunt for the perfect rug for about a year, but my budget definitely doesn't fit the rugs i like.

although i'd love to angle the chair in the corner, the file cabinet beside it is a big necessity in a small apartment that lacks an office area, so it stays straight on. plus it has the best view of grouse mountain from my living room!
