Inspiration: A Bare Coffee Table

coffeetable-01.jpgLike our countertops in the kitchen, our coffee table has a similar minimal vibe. Sticking to only the essentials of a decorative tray and coasters, we love looking at all of the clear, empty space...

A bare coffee table is a cinch to wipe down with windex after a night of entertaining friends (not to mention, there's a spare place for everyone to dine). An uncluttered coffee table also affords you a temporary spot to place things when you return home from running errands--or a holding zone for out box items. A rule we use to maintain a clean and clear coffee table is to always put dishes and belongings back once we're done using them.

Apartment Therapy readers--what's the vibe of your coffee table--minimal or cozy?

Without a doubt -- keep it bare. It enhances the feeling of space and opens my domestic world to possibility.

In my house, its always bare. I don't like clutter and certainly not on a small space like a coffee table.

I steadfastly keep my coffee table bare - the only exception being the remote, but I'd like to stop doing that as well - it's easy to wipe down, and looks clean!

I also have to have a bare bathroom sink, except for hand soap - I never understand people who leave out products or other bathroom doodads - yuck!

keep it bare! Piper, one of my setters has the "tail of death" and performs a clean sweep at any and every opportunity!

I keep mine bare. I don't understand people who load theirs up with books, trays, vases and knick-knacks.

Agreed. Uncluttered coffee tables make a room look so much tidier. What I don't understand is people who insist on coaster use when they have glass tables. They're so easy to wipe down, and coasters are so annoying.

I keep a trio of vases and a short stack of coffee-table books on mine - Looks cozier that way.

I like it bare and uncluttered also - easy to wipe clean. The only things that we have on there are cork coasters and the remote.

However, even though I like it bare, some days I'm just way too lazy to clean and care. That's when it becomes the catch-all (mail, phone, two or more beverages, laptop, etc.). Then I get yelled yet by the husband.

bare - so there is actually room for a cup of coffee or a dinner infront of the tv

I never understand people who for instance stack books on coffee tables! another one of my pet peeves I guess.

I don't like coffee tables. Prefer ottoman's and big pillows

North Brain most likely their table is a Noguchi in which Modern Glass Top and Tribeca are close (knock offs) to the Noguchi.

I am old school I love coffee table books and since I do not have a tone storage I rotate my books onto the coffee table.
This was I actually read them or look at the pictures..plus it adds some color. My table is glass so I am constantly wiping it down.

i keep one tea light holder, a coaster, & sometimes the remote on mine. but nothing else because puppies eat EVERYTHING. like the blue pen someone left on my coffee table one day. blue ink stains are still scattered around the apartment.

but the uncluttered feel of it is great as well.

I prefer bare...or mabye a vase, candle, or a couple of displayed books etc...but I really dislike STACKS of books, or a dozen candles/vases or any 'clutter' on a coffee table.

we have the same coffee table & it's always covered with large books and our magazines. the good thing is that it still looks less cluttered than it normally would since the top is glass. it's the only cluttered area in our place as well since we have absolutely nowhere else to put all our books.

Totally bare and easy to clean.

What I don't totally do not get is people that keep things on their kitchen counters (crocks of utensils, stand mixers, etc). People say it looks cozy. All I can think about is how hard it is to properly clean, and therefore, how infrequently it probably gets cleaned.

Have you ever lifted up a crock full of utensils from someone's countertop? It is often disgusting. Lots of people wipe down the empty parts of the counter daily, and it doing so, shift liquid and grime under under less often moved (maybe moved weekly) objects. Super gross, as all of that bacterial soup is in food prep areas.

I'm all about putting things away (even when I had a kitchen with 1 cabinet, and I had to bring in my own additional wall mounted pot rack, shelving and a kitchen cart to have places to put things away).

Bare, with a discreet stack of coasters off to one side. Easier to wipe down that way.

Unfortunately the kitchen and dining tables then become the catch-alls.

We HAVE to keep a tray on it, because otherwise it will just get covered in junk (keys, cords, post-its, etc). At least the tray corrals the junk until we get around to organizing it. Other than that, flowers, a silver paperweight in the shape of a large beetle (it gets used) and a handmade pottery bowl form Ecuador. We are not minimalists! That said, I hate our current coffee table, so I don't care deeply about what goes on it. When we actually get one I love I expect that I will care a lot more about keeping it bare.

I like the idea of completely bare- but in my house it's unrealistic. We keep a stack of coasters and a gorgeous little hand-carved box that my boyfriend got me. That's how it would look when we have guests coming over or we've just cleaned the space. And usually the remote control is there, too. However, our living room is our main hang out spot - so there's frequently lots of other stuff on there, like mail, keys and cell phones since it's where we plop ourselves when we come home. ...I try!

My coffee table is home to two smallish plants, one coaster (the rest are on a nearby bookshelf), and sometimes my cat when she's not lounging on my wii fit. O_o I do keep some books and random things on the lower tier, but they stay in a basket to corral the mess.

Coasters, coffee cup, laptop, and a bowl with misc stuff live on the coffee table. Bare never seems to last.
