We really enjoy seeing entries in local design competitions, especially when there is prize money involved. The 2009 Cicely & Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Awards are focused on ‘contemporary seat furniture design’ with the prize of AU$30,000. Simone LeAmon took out first place with her chair titled ‘Lepidoptera’ and she says “my concept draws on the anatomy of a butterfly’s wing to bring purpose to the formal equation of structure, colour and pattern”. Anyway- we’d really like to see it in person as well as some of the other 13 entries, see more below the jump…

The winning chair, Simone LeAmon’s ‘Lepidoptera’, is made from steel, foam and textile scraps from the automotive industry collected over the past 10 years.
Above: ‘George Jr’ by Cathy Jankowsky made from plywood and ‘Flex hammock’ by Adam Cornish made from plywood, stainless steel cable and rubber
Above: ‘Hedge, lounge and table’ by Oliver Field made from metal, polyurethane, wool and steel and ‘Ribbon’ by Lambie Chan made from Mountain Ash
Above: ‘Lapel’ by Stuart McFarlane made from plastic and ‘101 Chair’ by Helen Kontouris made from fibreglass, wool and felt
Above: ‘Flow’ by Chris Connell made from fibreglass and ‘Frequency’ by Ross McLeod made from plywood, steel, polyurethane and wool/nylon blend
Our favourite is the ‘Ribbon’ by Lambie Chan, it reminds us of the wood curls that’s we used to find in our Dad’s shed. The 2009 Cicely & Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award are on display at The Ian Potter Centre, Federation Square in Melbourne from Thursday 12 March to Sunday 30 August. More information can be found here.

It looks like it would smell a bit.

At first glance, I thought it was a sneaker.

Agreed, sneaker.
I adore the hammock, though.

Simply and magnificently UGLY. Why do folks have to faux everything. This is shear and luxurious major hit with ugly stick. Thanks for showing it. It put a smile on my face. Don't get me wrong, I love lace up boots, corsets, and chaps however, sometimes an adaptation can take an unfortunate turn and in this case who wants to sit in a smelly looking sneaker.

I like the ribbon best, too. I think it's a console table/sculpture, though, not a seat. But in any case, I could find a place for it in my home! Oh yeah!
