Over the span of a year, we receive, post, answer, and share multitudes of reader questions, so we're always very happy to receive updates from the original reader who sent in their question. Such was the case with reader, Anna, who sent us this email updating how her hallway runner dilemma turned out...

Before the reduction in FLOR tiles
I wrote in a while back about the FLOR runner we were trying to create in our hallway. I really appreciated all the feedback people kindly gave and wanted to follow up with the latest development (first image), which is two one-tile width runners (the break in the middle is where the hallway has a horizontal branch). I'm not positive that it's the final solution, but I definitely like it a lot better than before. I actually really like the amount of space between the edges and the walls - but my eye thinks that the carpet itself should be wider, so I may still try some options that include half-tiles (rectangular or triangular).
Some of the comments questioned the need for a runner in the hallway at all, since we really like our floors. However, because the hallway is so long and with such a high ceiling, I really like the look of something soft-textured, and I like the feel underfoot. Really, the primary reason though is that the cat absolutely adores rolling around on the carpet - as you can see!
The cat's the clincher. Looks great - to my eye, anything much wider than a single-width obscures too much of that beautiful floor.

Nice cat, but I don't think this was a good solution. If it were my house I'd have a brighter series of colors to contrast with the floor (and you could do that with Flor) or I'd remove the runner entirely (which I guess was proposed, but nixed). The Flor tiles don't look too good, either, but maybe that's the photos. I don't mean to be harsh, but this just doesn't look good to me, and with such a lovely floor, why do you think you need to "soften" it?

I have to agree with Charlotte - the Flor tiles look raggedy and sort of dirty. Maybe it's the photos...
Personally, I dislike carpeting of any kind. It's usually filthy. I've ripped carpeting out of rooms and couldn't believe what I'd been living with. Ever since then, it's been bare floors only for me. (I do make an exception for a small entrance rug for wet shoes, but it's washed and/or replaced often.)
You have a lovely floor and the carpet tiles really add nothing to it. If kitty likes to roll on some, I'd give her a couple of tiles to play on in another area.

I have to agree, the texture and color need to change. I feel something more refined and silkier, lighter weight would be great in that space. I think a rug similar to the one shown in the link below would be great. If you're on a budget, you could make a beautiful runner using canvas that would start at the door and continue to the end.

How many times can I use the word 'great' :o) ?

I think it definitely looks better with one width rather than two... but I don't think the runner improves the look of the hall. If you think the hall looks a little cold, maybe painting the walls in a rich color will help. But if you really want a runner, I think sassifrassi's suggestion would be nice.

I agree with most of these comments -- the floors look great, so why cover them up? It doesn't seem like a good solution, but maybe that's because I'm not a cat person :-)
