apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

A Small Change with Big Results: Adding a New FLOR Rug

Our small apartment has reached the point where it's pretty much maximized for our lifestyle, with little room for additional furniture to be added without taking away from the roominess we covet in such a limited space. But that doesn't mean we've lost a desire to occasionally mix things up or refresh the look of the room. Sometimes a subtle or minimal change can redefine a room, without the need for something too costly or drastic...

We live on a limited and modest income, so that means any changes we wanted to make would have to require an affordable and easy solution (like our previous stairway project). We didn't want to repaint (yet), because that would likely include some drastic changes to our upholstery and furniture finishes to match our vision of a completely re-realized space. No, at this time, what we wanted was more of a refresh than a redo, and the easiest route we saw in accomplishing this was to change out the slightly worn for wear Target shag rug in the center of our living room.

The once fluffy light cream colour rug was several years old, a budget flooring solution that over time lost its texture and darkened with the constant foot traffic it endured day to day. Even in a no-shoes household, just the amount of dust and dirt that Los Angeles air brings into a household alongside being a two pet household was enough to make it evident that the shag's best days were long gone and it was an opportune time to sell it at a yard sale and upgrade to something nicer.

That something nicer came way of FLOR and Martha Stewart. Upon first site, we fell in love with the Faux Bois pattern rug tiles. A light Bisque Reed design complements our lighter pieces, while providing a little bit of textural interest where our previous rug was yet another solid element. Half the fun was piecing together the texture like a large jigsaw puzzle (okay, this was more fun for Emily...I just wanted to put it altogether right away).

101309eamesflor.jpgEames lazily approves of the flooring update; the new rug has quickly become a favourite spot to doze off upon (the cats, not us!).

The FLOR rugs also do a good job of hiding a flat HDMI wires that runs from the overhead projector down to underneath the couch, underneath the rug and over to the entertainment center. Both cats immediately took a liking to it, so only time will tell how this particular design holds up to their feline affinity to scratch. But it's already proven to be very easy to clean using our standard Hoover canister vacuum, and it's also been a nice surface to workout upon daily (Emily and I have recently embarked on that Shaun T Insanity program, so each evening we're prancing and sweating like two fools upon the rug). I also like the subtle connection between the faux bois pattern on the floor and the similar pattern in my home office, on my desk.

Overall, we're very pleased with the new FLOR tiles and how the new pattern has revived the space with enough character that the room looks updated. Of course buying new furniture or painting the walls would result in a more dramatic change, but if you're looking for a more modest and affordable change, look down instead of up like we did.

My two cats scratch our Flor tiles all day long, and after four years, there are two or three snags. Definitely a sturdy product! I like the update - the texture is really nice!

Honestly, I can barely tell the difference, although I like the texture of the original rug better. But if it seems easier to keep clean and hides cables and makes you happy, great!

sally305: I think it's one of those changes that is apparent in person, but seems more subtle in photos because of lighting conditions. We liked the shag but it was definitely losing structural integrity, so this was a nice change which people seem to notice/like upon entering (and more importantly, we like it).

Great idea with the tiles and an interesting pattern. I presume you can change the configuration, which will give you a lot of flexibility, if you choose. BTW - beautiful cat!

I agree with Sally. A gray rug replaced by a gray rug. But I also agree with Sally, if you like it, great!

Glad to hear those FLOR tiles hold up well. They likely to appear in my next apt.

Maybe one more row of the FLOR tiles would help. I don't like that someone sitting on the couch puts their feet on the floor and the carpet. It just seems a little undersized for the space.

I am a huge huge fan of Flor tiles! I have a similar beige floor rug in my living room and just adore it. I can also attest to them being very user-friendly, easy to clean, easy to walk on and my personal favorite: anti-slip. The rubber backing in brilliant.

I also have Flor Fedora tiles in my kitchen (to cover up the hardwood floor in the kitchen). These tiles look really tidy and you can even sweep them with a regular broom.

Flor has some fabulous new colors too and I sometimes dream about adding color via the floor instead of on the walls.

I loved this pattern at first sight, too, but when I calculated the cost... not a budget-friendly solution! $21 per tile adds up to over a grand for the 9x12 area I need to cover. For that price I can get a nice wool rug.

I also don't understand how FLOR tiles are a budget-friendly, inexpensive option. Every time I look at pricing a FLOR rug for a room, I'm way over $500, which is definitely not friendly to my budget. Am I missing something here?

Y'all don't think this makes a big difference in the room? I love the change -- good job. :)

One more comment--I think when people submit "before and after" images, they should shoot them from the same perspective. Part of the reason the "after" might look better here is that the lighting is better (making the table look more orange) and the surfaces are clear and tidy. But no, mlleErica, I really don't think this makes a big difference at all--at least as far as I can tell from the photos.

leanneabe: it's of note that true quality rugs cost in the thousands of dollars, while made-in-China budget rugs at your big box retailer fall somewhere under $60, so I think it's fair to say that FLOR are an affordable inbetween solution since you can mix, match and add as time goes by instead of being forced to settle for an extreme on either side. It may not be a "purchase on a whim" product, but it's certainly affordable if you plan for it.

But please note, I'm not knocking extremely affordable rugs, as we have a $59 IKEA rug in my home office and I note we lived with an Target rug prior. But the quality and design is recognizably improved in comparison, and compared to some of the really expensive (and ultimately beautiful) rugs I've ogled, these are within a price range that seems attainable.

I agree w/ LeeHou - Although the carpet tiles are a nice improvement, it's awfully undersized...
...at least these are something that one can add onto at a later time as budget allows - either a contrasting border row of tiles all the way around or a checkerboard pattern of tiles would be a nice choice.

bepsf and LeeHou: you two are right, we came to the same conclusion after looking at these photos a few weeks ago. In the rush to post this, I didn't take new photos of the most updated rug which has an additional row that expands upon the size shown above. I'll add to this with updated photos once I can find some time to even change out of my pajama bottoms :)

Not sure I get this... They had an old rug, so they replaced it with carpet tiles. Is there something I am missing?

Does anyone know where that coffee table is from? I've been looking for one almost exactly like it.

dropkickbliss: the coffee table is from Modernica. It seems they only carry the square corner table version currently.

I don't know how to say this without sounding completely creepy, but you two have the most kissable cats I've ever seen. They always looks so soft, sweet and snuggly. More cat photos, I say.

A few comments on Flor tiles...

About 5 years ago I got a couple sets of flor tiles and they were horrible. They destroyed my floors, they did not stick to the ground and were always migrating (which looked terrible when trying to have an area rug look). Following the instructions, on the inner tiles of the "area rugs" I did not remove the cover of the sticky tabs, but no matter, the sticky goo seeped around the edges and created an awful mess. I know that they have changed their design a little. The sticky pads I think now face up and stick to the other actual tiles instead of the floor (but does the glue still ooze out?). I LOVE the flor tile look and am really upset they didnt work. Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone tell me how the new "sticker" design is holding up???

NOT an affordable option.
As someone else said, it would be the same price to get a beautiful thick wool rug.

Love the faux bois though.

I agree, the faux bois looks awesome. Looks great in your space. Personally, I see and love the difference. It's cleaner look.

jamie_sue, I think the tab design has changed quite a bit. I've had my tiles for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems. The tabs sit sticky side up and attach corner to corner. I haven't noticed any seepage and the floor beneath them was perfectly clean after my last move. And they don't shift underfoot at all.

The biggest benefit for me was I was able to fully cover an irregular sized space with the tiles. A standard sized rug would have been awkward in the space. And when I moved to another home with another awkward space, I was able to reuse the tiles in a different design and spread the tiles over two rooms. In both homes, the tiles look like they were custom designed for the space.

I LOVE my FLOR tiles. My cats scratch them as well but I'm just thankful their hair's don't stick to it as much as my old rug did.

I think the new Flor tiles are great. I love the wood design in your space. I disagree with Sally that it's the same thing. It really isn't. It's a fresh, spiffy change.

I think the difference is probably more distinct in person than in the photos.

We also had Flor tiles as an area rug a few years ago. It was terrible. Followed instructions also, and still had terrible tile migration. The tiles were discolored too soon (from what? the living room light? weird) and it was not cheap to begin with. Ended up getting a really cute West Elm area rug and have loved it more, for sure. And it was cheaper and has held up so much more. I am pretty sure that Flor tiles would work better wall to wall, not as an area rug.

Nice Flor tiles, but I have to admit, I don't see a huge transformation here...it is basically the same color scheme.
