A Spin On The Standard Spice Rack

It's that time of year when folks head into the kitchen more frequently--whipping up a dish to take to a party or a holiday gathering. It's also around this season of socializing that our spice rack tends to double in size. If your pantry can't keep the new surplus organized, here's a spin on the standard spice rack that we recently found (and love).

The spice rack is designed by T.K. Smith who also makes custom kitchens, baths and office storage. Made from maple plywood and steel, this particular spice rack is modern and fun. T.K. manages to create a great-looking spice rack with a mid-century modern vibe that we could definitely live with. And if you need more spice rack inspiration, check out these awesome finds;

Cute, but kind of wasteful of space and labor-intensive to build. Spices really prefer to be out of the light.

It is stylish, but...

... simple shelves, rather than individual perches for each spice, would be a better use of space and allow for more flexibility.

Spice racks - while pretty - really aren't great for your spices...
...and who actually buys all their spices in perfectly matching little bottles and jars?

Best to keep them out of the light in a cool, dry place such as a cabinet or a drawer.

Just putting in a personal plug for Penzey's spices...they are the best! But I agree, they need to be kept in a dark, cool and dry place.

Ditto all above. A friend of mine kept her spices/dried herbs on one of those open & exposed style spice racks. So I grabbed one of the herb jars of dried rosemary and turned it around to show her the sun damage. The back half of the jar has nice green dried rosemary while the front half was pale and greenish-tan. Other jars were even worse.

My spice rack has all matching jars :-) (but I transfer bulk spices into the bottles... they're not all of the same brand)

I agree with the other posters. Another kitchen design by someone who has a great aesthetic sense, but not a lot of cooking experience, I fear. Spice storage needs to be efficient.

My favorite rack is still the classic 2 tier lazy susan rack that you keep in a cabinet besides the stove. it holds a ton, nicely displays everything, rotates for easy bottle access, and is stored in the dark. perfect.

Not the best solution if you have spice jars in many different sizes. I keep mine in a cabinet, away from sunlight, they seem to fare better that way.

This would be a nice display for little figurines. Spices? They go in a dark cupboard.
