A Swinging Good Time: An Indoor Bedroom Swing

042508atlaswing01.jpgOne of things we always wanted growing up was a patio bench swing. Our neighbor and best friend had one installed in their tiny front courtyard and there was no simple pleasure quite as relaxing as gently swinging during warm summer evenings. But how about one installed indoors...

Given as a Valentine's gift, the bench was lovingly installed by Shauna's boyfriend Stephen, and further appointed with handmade pillows sewn together using his collection of tote bags. If that ain't sweet, we don't know what sweet is.

I love everything about that bedroom.

But...as much as I love porch swings, I'm not sure I'd have the balls to put one inside. Let alone the bedroom.

'small' is clearly entering its last day :-) but if i had a bedroom sized like that, it'd be cool.

How do you anchor it to the ceiling?

Man, this is so close to the indoor hammock I've always wanted.

I grew up with 2 swings inside the house. We brought the hardware back from India & had a handyman install it into our ceiling. Way fun at parties as a teenager. Great place to think and relax at the end of the day.

In Venezuela everyone has hammocks inside their homes, so this swing, to me, is the reinvention of a classic :)

I used to sit on the porch swinng forever when we used to visit the country (Alabama).

Not quite cool inside the home though.

Even worse is a bed suspended by chains which I saw on one of those they-should-arrested-and-stripped-of-their-design-credentials-if-they-have-any-at-all-for-doing-that-to-those-poor-people's-homes-and-should-be-cancelled shows on HGTV.

It would certainly make cleaning the floors easier.

swing...eh, hammock YES.

but the rest of this room is really catching my eye... the wallpaper behind the bed, the bed itself, the color of the dresser and end table... and... is that a... a deer collection?

Growing up my friend Windsong (yes, her parents were hippies) had one in her bedroom. They lived in a gorgeous Victorian that they were renovating and her Dad was able to anchor it in the big ceiling beams right in the middle of the room so we could really swing up high! I have such fond memories of my friend and her lovely home...I wish I hadn't lost touch with her.

Oh wow, I want. Seriously, how would you anchor it to the ceiling? Same way you'd do it outside, I guess, once you locate the beams. But I'd be a little intimidated. Has anyone done this? Tips?

I can barely traverse my bed & a couple of dogs, much less furniture that moves!

I can imagine crashing to the floor with a thunderous kaboom, then looking up to see the ceiling fall down on my head. No thanks, not good for my rowhouse's questionable rehabbed ceiling.
