apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

AT Asia: The Toilet House

atla032708-toilethaus01.jpgHow appropriate, considering this is the tail end of Bathroom Month here at Apartment Therapy. Don't let the name or the exterior of this residence located just outside of Seoul, Korea fool you...the interior is a modernist stunner (just was reminded that Abby posted 3D renders before). More photos of the Toilet House after the jump...

atla032708-toilethaus02.jpgWe like how the toilet is even angled for an outward view.

I like the expanse of window with the staggered frame design.

Ick! Cold and sterile. With an unfortunate name to boot.

Needs color, but the interior architecture is decent.

Looks like lots of fun, actually! Kind of surreal, like an ice-cave. With more imaginative furniture it would be a blast.

I like the shape of the house, but the interior looks rather blah. Needs some more colorful furniture and some artwork on the walls to add some punch!

I find people's comments strange here. Why is everyone suggesting makeovers for what is a very finished design?
It appeas to me that the Intention, with a capital I, behind this house is to be cool and monochromatic. As cool and monochromatic houses go, it may be average or above - hard to tell from small pictures. In the living room, clearly the focus is on framing the view ( in the bathroom, also). The times I've spent in buildings like this - mind you, I've never been in a Richard Meier house, only the public buildings - I've been focused on the light or the view, or the humans.

Sure the kitchen is clean and slick - now visualize the makings of a green salad and strawberries on the counter - they will pop like vases of flowers.

I also wonder what the lighting is like at night - I suspect it feels cozy and romantic, if it's not over-lit.
If the living room were used for a fashion shoot, we would really see the model and the clothes - I think interiors like this are a stage for human life, which is not reflected in the way they usually are photographed.

It's very ship-like , like lots of early modern buildings.Do we think yachts are boring if they're mostly white?
