Barbie Malibu Dream House by Jonathan Adler Revealed!

031109atlabarbiehouse02.jpgYou know what this is, don't you? We reported it would be coming soon not too long ago and the day has finally arrived. That inner 6 year old girl (or boy) may be very excited at seeing a childhood dream come to life, maybe even more so because this 3,500 square foot Malibu house was designed by none other than J. Adler himself for the blonde icon. The team over at LAist were fortunate to get a peek inside the temporary fantasy beach house...

Check out even more photos of the dream realized over at LAist.

I got excited by the subject but then the photos...this is like barbie meets Liberace. There is Barbie/cute but this is Barbie/garish! I think my childhood barbie had a beach house that was far more chic than this...

Barbie and Skipper will certainly love it...
...but they'll soon find poor Ken bunking w/ G.I. Joe.

I usually love Adler but this is hideous IMHO. The bedroom looks like a brothel. The other rooms have so much pattern and busyness they make my head hurt. I wouldn't want to be in those rooms even for a couple of minutes.

That Barbie sure is an egomaniac... I mean, I understand pictures of yourself, but a chandelier swathed in your own blonde hair?

Barbie is her own stalker?

This is a questionable way to spend your time as a designer.

This looks so much like the house on the Surreal Life. The Barbie house is now a reality tv show set.

So glad I didnt have a hangover when I scrolled to this...
You really should have a neutral front page and warn people if they open the site, it could cause momentary blindness and splitting headaches.

Hair! I was staring at that chandelier trying to figure out what it was made of- glad you guys solved that for me! I kind of actually like this, it isn't meant to be serious design but more like visual hyperbole... Couldn't you just see our favorite 6'0" 115 lb blonde friend brushing up on her stewardess/lawyer/cheerleader/veteranarian skills on that couch? And I'm inspired by the red on pink, it looks awesome together here.

Hair chandelier is super gross.

I don't hate all of it though.

I am thinking about Padma Lakshmi's place though, and how brutally we should be tearing apart Barbie for plastering her ugly mug everywhere.

pretty lame it's not open to the public, though.

This is so completely and utterly outragously over-the-top. I get it and I love it. From the plastic hair chandelier (come on, who didn't cut the hair of at least one of your Barbies or better yet, spend hours on the Barbie Stylist head?) to the laced up chairs in the hideous Barbie patchwork, this "Dream Home" embodies the fantasy and imagination associated with Barbie and her lifestyle as it evolved over the decades.

Barbie is an icon and has earned the right to have her plastic mug all over her home just as much as Ken has the right to question the whereabouts of his genitalia. Lighten up people and laugh a little. Enjoy this like you would Graceland!

Why it looks EXACTLY like a cross between Jonathan Adler's Palm Beach place and the Jonathan Adler store, excluding the Barbie art/textiles of course. What a daring, ingenious marketer. I mean designer. I mean marketer.

This is as ugly as I remember Barbie's furniture in her Dream Cottage that used to be mine. So job well done I guess.

Actually I had another house that she had that was real gross.
I think it was her 'dream house'. What a nut!

In my opinion there isn't enough garish pink for Barbie, and it lacks cheesy juvenile sentiment...unless this is where Barbie does grown-up things.

I think this is going to be one of the things we'll regret the most from 2009 in the future...

I am shrieking in...I don't know what, but I'm shrieking. The Barbie hair chandelier makes me squirm, I have to admit, but the rest of it makes me want to go visit the house with all my girlfriends and go play Barbies for a day. And we are not particularly girly-girls, either.

Also, I love the list on the fridge:

"PICK UP

Peroxide
Glitter (lots and lots)..."

That Hair Chandelier is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. I do like that one of the text-riddled pillows includes the word "PEROXIDE" in giant type. Heh.

Otherwise, yarrrgh. I'm not certain if they were actually trying to recreate a real-life Barbie Dream House (if so, they missed) or simply capture the essence of Barbie Style (if so, they missed). Either way, that's just seizure-inducing.

Of course it's over the top: have any of you ever actually played with a Barbie or a Barbie dream house? It's the most over the top fantasy toy of all time.

Just think about this: Barbie's original measurements if human scaled would have been 39-18-33. Not your typical client.

I think Adler understood his client. This house is witty, inspired, even brilliant, with amazing attention to detail.

I always thought the Barbie concept was to be young and trendy, but Adler's bedroom is a little glitzy-grandma (maybe he should spend a little less time in Palm Beach).

I guess, in all fairness, Barbie did just celebrate her 50th. Maybe he's designing for her real age.

Wow, when I joined AT... I didn't realize that I would be communicating with so many small minded individuals. I would be curious to know if you all are designers or better yet a Barbie fan (and I don't mean just played with her as a child)? I'm a Barbie collector and have been for many years, if you understand her nature and anything about her aesthetic along with Jonathan Adler's then you should recognize the great execution of the house. Barbie has always been playful, wild, and sometimes unexpected...why shouldn't her house be the same? There is no other designer that could have capture Barbie as well as JA. What on earth did you expect the outcome to be, white walls and a few Eames rocking chairs (what we find a lot on this site - everything looks the same).

And for the person who made the comment about why are there so many pictures of Barbie herself in her own home... are you kidding...have you ever owned any accessories from Barbie? From years ago, I can remember at least two frames I had with Barbie and Stacie's "photo" in them... which came with a Stacie loft set up and the Barbie dream boat.

My advice for you is to do your share of research before you start bashing thoughtful and innovative design.
