Before and After: Alex's Projected Chalkboard Paint Project

013009alexwallbedroom01.jpgAT reader Alex is our DIY hero. He first impressed us with his Loft Room Divider and Wardrobe, an IKEA-based solution which provided privacy and storage in his downtown Los Angeles loft. Then he came back with an even better solution for hiding a fugly air conditioning unit into what many readers appointed a "10 out of 10". Looks like Alex is batting is batting a perfect 3 for 3, as he dropped us an update of his most recent loft project: the bedroom...

013009alexwallbedroom02.jpgAlex explains: While I love high design, I can't always afford it. Like the rest of my place, I try and achieve the look I want by looking at things that maybe are meant for one thing and tweaking them. As a photographer, I also like being creative and creating things on my own rather than buying off the shelf.

013009alexwallbedroom03.jpgFirst I painted the wall with chalkboard paint again. Even if I don't plan on using chalk on it, I love the color. Anyway, I then took one of my photos I took of a friend and converted it to a graphic image. Then projected it on the wall and painted it using a "blotting" motion with the brush to maintain the rough edges. The wall shelf is from ikea with lights from home depot inside. The pendant lamps are also from Ikea but are designed to be table lamps. Most of the cylinder pendant lamps I saw were just too expensive for me so I simply turned these $35.00 ikea ones over and hung them.

013009alexwallbedroom04.jpgI also found the bedside table in the as is section of ikea but put short legs on it instead of using the much higher ones that came with it. I think it retails for $80.00 but got it for $30.00 because it was being discontinued. I have twelve foot ceilings so curtains can be a hard thing to find. Had the sis make the 11.5ft curtain for me for christmas complete with a chain sewn into the bottom to keep them hanging right.

We don't know if there was any better way to conclude this month's focus on the bedroom than Alex's inspiring bedroom project. Sexy, creative and affordable...illustrating that chalkboard paint's matte finish can be utilized just for its texture and colour. She's a beauty, Alex.

What type of projector did you use to achieve such a fine level of detail on such a large wall?

Very inspirational! Fantastic job well done!

Thanks for the positive comments. I get so much inspiration from this site and am glad I can contribute.

-Ptown Tara, It was a basic digital projector (no hd) that I borrowed from work. Because I had the room divider/wardrobe in the way, it was a challenge finding the right spot for the projector. Had it sitting on a trash can with books and crap to get it where I needed it.

Plus, the image was a high rez, 50mb photo of mine allowing the image to be blown up with out losing quality.

Looks great. But I hope she's your girlfriend, because an 8' tall portrait painted on the wall behind your bed might antagonize anyone but the sitter.

Alex, I think you are probably the sexiest man I've never seen. I feel like I've stumbled upon a kindred spirit- the way your mind works! All 3 of your posted projects made me catch my breath. After all this time perusing AT silently, I had to go to the trouble of registering to comment just so I could tell you that! Bravo, well done!

Fantastic room. The curtains give just the right softness to take off the edge. Speaking of, I have a vision for something similar - what was the source on the fabric? Is it velvet? I love the drape but am realizing velvet is crazy expensive - and picks up cat fur like whoa.

I'm getting that everyone is loving it.. but not me at all. Sorry but it reminds me of those bad t-shirts that everyone was wearing in about 2004 of 60s or 70s glamour girls printed waaaaay too big for the space (in that case, a tee shirt, in this case a wall) and also... no duvet cover in any of the pics? Not sexy at all.

--BUT sorry, I cannot get past the duvet not having a cover -- it's a guy thing -- but it is yucky not to have a duvet cover, and ruins the room!

I don't get why not having a duvet cover is gross. If you wash the comforter, what's the big deal?

Wow. Love the offset Ikea shelves above the bed (symmetry freaks take note!) and the composition of the whole room.

And I too don't get the gross-out over the duvet without a cover. Plenty of people don't wash the cover any more than others wash the duvet itself.

Lol.....people not washing the cover anymore than others wash the duvet itself is equally as gross....that's like wearing the same t-shirt for months at a time. Very gross. I know people wear pj's to bed a lot but there are...other...things... people do in bed. Things that makes people sweat and other, ahem, fluids. I'm not saying this dude doesn't wash his duvet. I just don't understand why someone wouldn't want a cover. They are much easier to wash and if you are renting, most places don't even have a washer big enough to accomodate washing a duvet.

I just love the creativity and the fun use of your space. I thought the room divider solution was really smart and now this just fun. Its great that you spent very little money and achieve such drama.

I find something very freeing about living in an open plan/ space or open loft space. You need to create structure and divisions of space and it forces you to be creative or it allows you more creativity than living in a conventional dwelling.

Now have sis make you a duvet cover.

sarahisaghost:

It's like sleeping on a pillow without a pillowcase -- would you do that too?

And sure, you can wash your duvet every week, but it'll destroy it pretty soon, much sooner than you will wear out a duvet cover.

This is a guy thing -- I've known so many single guys who do this.

Presumably he's using it the same as a comforter, with a top sheet. So it shouldn't need washing any more often, or get destroyed any faster in the wash, than a comforter.

Alex, this looks unbelievably fantastic. Hats off.

I am impressed! I like the idea of using the chalkbaord paint even if you have no intention of writing on it. The finish can be nice without having to go through all the steps of applying a faux finish. The projection of the image then drawing it is wonderful. For those of us who are not so creative, there are products on the market that can give similar (not as personalized) effects. Great job!

Alex, Amazing! I....LOVE....IT!!!!!!

I did something similar in my kitchen with a white peacock on a black wall. It wasn't nearly as large but it totally made the whole room. Unfortunately, I painted over it (beige-ugh) in preparation to sell and then ended up staying. You have inspired me to do another full wall mural.

And I love the crisp whiteness of the duvet against the dark colors. Who cares if you have a cover? It's your bed.

Making the bed European style is the only way to go (for me), no top sheet just a duvet.
