Blogging: Wing Drop Leaf Table in Blueprint

We were beginning to get worried. We've been eagerly awaiting the newest issue of Blueprint like the impatient subscribers we are, frustrated after seeing the newest issue on newsstands time after time, but not in our mail slot.

Lo and behold, we got our issue today, and we immediately noted this gem of a wing drop leaf table featured in the cover story about Editor-in-chief Sarah Humphreys' small space makeover (great inspiration for the upcoming Smallest Coolest Contest; Sarah lives in a 307 sq. ft. one bedroom apartment).

Only 11.2" wide when folded up, the drop leaf table opens to a spacious 59" wide and 31" deep dining, desk or work table. There's even storage in the middle for whatever you'd like to hide away. This is an extremely tempting purchase, even with the $756 price tag. Time to empty out the penny jar and hope for that raise, because we're smitten with this smart convertible tabletop solution. Thanks Blueprint!

My husband and I bought a very similar drop-leaf table from Ikea when we moved to our current (tiny) apartment. Not only is it a fraction of the price, but there are more drawers for storage. Unfortunately, I can't find it on Ikea's website and I don't remember the price, but it was nowhere near $756.

The IKEA versions are such great alternatives. However, the slick, smooth white surface is OH SO TEMPTING!

Strangely, I couldn't find it on the US site, but it's listed in other country IKEA online catalogs.

Personally, I like the material, fit and finish of the original. But it's definitely worth considering painting and customizing yourself with the money you (or I) could save!

I knew I had seen that idea before! Thanks Sasha and Michelle for reminding me. I am pretty sure that there are probably more versions of this design around in different materials and at different price points.

It's a common sewing/craft table design too. In fact, that might have been the original purpose. It is so similar to old sewing machine tables where the machine itself could be hidden and take up less space.

has anyone ever tried to refinish the ikea version? i saw it in the store and felt the lacquered birch, it seemed impossible to refinish. we have tried to refinish ikea lacquered pieces before, and even though we sand and prime, the surface comes out a bit tacky (sticky) and nicks too easily. does anyone have a trick they could share if they have refinished this type of ikea wood before?

I can't find either table.
I'm lookin for a drop leaf to use as a work area.
I need console width to fit a flat screen monitor, and a length no longer than 31".
I can buy Ikea legs but can't find a table top.
Does anyone know of an alternative to the table, or where to buy a drop leaf, or have a drop leaf fabricated?
