Cordless Stick Vacuums Recalled by Electrolux

032509Ergorapido-01.jpgSome of you may remember our hands-on review of the Electrolux Ergorapido 2-in-1 Sweeper. We honestly use the thing nearly each and every day in our apartment for quick cat fur, litter and dust duty in our apartment. No issues at all with it, besides having to clean it out regularly because of the good job it does sucking in unwanted matter. But this morning we were notified by our contacts over at Electrolux about the specific model we're using is being recalled due to a design issue that may put users at risk. They are aware quite a few AT readers who own one might want to know about the free replacement/recall program...

Here's the info directly from our contact:

Hazard: The vacuum’s battery can expand and burst, posing a risk of injury to the user and bystanders.

Incidents/Injuries: Electrolux has received 34 reports of incidents in the U.S. involving damage to the vacuum and surrounding property. There have been two reports of minor injuries, including swollen hands and irritation to the eyes from contact with battery powder.

Description: This recall involves 2-in-1 cordless stick vacuums with a detachable hand vacuum and free-standing charger. Units involved in the recall have 9.6-volts printed on a serial plate on the underside of the handheld unit, and the following serial numbers: 0740000001 through 085100001 and 74000001 through 85100001.

  • EL1000A –Pronto
  • EL1000B-Pronto
  • EL1000BX – Pronto
  • EL1000BZ – Pronto
  • PE1000B – Precision
  • EL1005A – Ergorapido
  • EL1006A - Ergorapido

Remedy: Consumers should immediately unplug and stop using the recalled vacuums and contact Electrolux for a free replacement of the handheld portion which contains the batteries.

For additional information, contact Electrolux Home Care Products at (800) 932-1778 between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday and Sunday. Consumers can also visit the firm’s website for more information.

We're sending our own hand vac portion for a replacement immediately, and we recommend if you're an owner to follow suit.

Big thanks from me too!
I took your recommendation and love the product too. I'm happy to be getting a new, safe model.

I'd like to send back the whole thing and get something else in return, such as my money back. I don't know about you guys, but my model seems to just push the dirt around and not pick up anything.

Thanks for the recommendation though... maybe there is something w/ the handheld unit and replacing it will fix the fact that it doesn't actually vacuum anything :)

Awe...that's a bummer. I just put my outside with a "FREE" sign on it after getting tired of its lack of sucking action. As vacuum go, I have to say this one really sucked...but not in the good way that you'd expect from a vacuum.

Oh well...who ever it was that picked it up might get to take advantage of the recall when they too get fed up with the lack of sucking action.

Just called ours in. Customer serv rep was very pleasant and said they will send a FedEx prepaid label. 7-10 business days to process once they get it and then wait another 7-10 business days to get the replacement.

Thanks for the heads up!

I could never even think of buying anything made by Electrolux after they closed down their factory near Grand Rapids, MI and pretty much shut down the whole town, to move their manufacturing to Mexico.

I just wanted to urge everyone to be sure to return their recalled vacs--more than just minor injuries are possible.

A Vancouver-area woman got 3rd degree burns when the battery in her Electrolux exploded:

kendokendokendo! I have the same problem. I feel like I am playing dirt hockey all the time. It looks fabulous in the corner of my kitchen, but I hardly ever use it. Wish I did more research before I got it. If they are doing the recall in Japan as well, maybe I can get a new one.
