Like many of you we've been mostly window shopping rather than purchasing even with all the excellent sales around. But the one sale we've always looked forward to is the DWR Clearance. There's always a few pieces we normally couldn't afford that turn into a reasonable splurge once the prices fall "within reach" (at least with our moderate budget reach), alongside the offer of free shipping. Here's 5 of our favourite picks of items we've always liked and now we can consider with the sale prices. Just a warning...looks like other bargain hunters/window shoppers are hitting the DWR site hard. The site is loading extremely slow this morning...

Wall Book Hanger: an all metal storage solution designed to serve as a replacement for a shelf and long enough to hold a large-format book or tabloid-size magazine. 33% off ($18.76)
Calder Table: 60% off brings this $650 table down to a respectable $259 and is one heckuva stylish display table for a corner. We like to imagine several assorted terrariums ontop of each platform...or a fine selection of cheese and delectable petit fours for guests.
Eclipse Lamp: We've always liked designs directly influenced by shapes from nature, and the Eclipse Lamp looks like many of the sea shells we collected this summer across the California coast. $73.70, a 33% savings.
Bummer, the Bingo Pouf with Tray Table has already sold out in the short time I've been compiling this list. It's a great small space solution for party and sleepover (the one and the same?) guests. Come on DWR...bring out a few more!

Sorry, but "Designs Within Reach" is one of the most inaccurately named stores ever. I went to one of their "sales" (note the use of ironic quotation marks) in Cincinnati last year and was struck at the large collection of over-priced and poorly-constructed pieces. They "looked" good, but they were not, in fact, good at all.
It was my first experience with DWR and it will most definitely be my last.

i do agree that you need to be discriminating when choosing your furniture. i sometimes feel like DWR is def more fashion over function. But, i also think some of the things they carry are gorgeous and worth negotiating their actual functionality.
i just bought 2 bullet planters as holiday gifts, and at $62 (and free shipping), they are well worth it.

'Design within Reach' was never meant financially, it meant that you could obtain the items without waiting 6 months like many other design/furniture stores.

I've been planning to buy the Eclipse lamp, bracing myself to fork over full price, still hoping for a sale... At just under $80 (with tax) it's still pricey, but I wanted it badly, so I'm ordering it.
...In fact, I just did :)

I have the Eclipse light, and am ambivalent. It looks spectacular at night when it's lit, but by day it's sort of junky white plastic. Love the design itself though.

True "design within reach" is no further than your local thrift shop, antiques store or estate and tag sales. The prices are far less (usually) and yo can feel good about the whole "green" aspect of recycling rather than buying new. Vintage is usually far more stylish and far better quality.

I've had my issues with DWR, but the Vas-One, which I've been swooning over for YEARS, on sale for $440 is a freakin' deal!!!
God help me if I don't cave in by the end of the night and buy it.

I'm with you, Bo Placebo. DWR's customer service is BAD (in my experiences)! With the pricing as it is, I'd certainly expect it to be better.

The name has nothing to do with price people! Its about bringing famous designs to the public, so that you don't have to work through designers or architects or manufacturers. They have really high quality stuff, it will last a lifetime. Also DWR has great service, well at least if you work through a studio...call center and online services need some work! Check out the local showrooms...great new store in Santa Monica!
