DIY Loft Room Divider and Wardrobe

atla011408after01.jpg

AT:LA reader Alex is the proud new occupant of a downtown Los Angeles loft. But although he liked the open space living, he was in need of some privacy and hidden storage for his bedroom. Check out the impressive IKEA hacked room divider and wardrobe he made using seven 8'x2' IKEA Numerar pre-cut counter tops in black brown for $10.00 a piece below...

A couple "before" photos

I found 7, 8ftx2ft Numerar pre-cut counter tops in black brown for $10.00 a piece. I stood 6 of them on
end and created a room divider and a wardrobe slot on the other. With the last one I added chrome legs and created a desk/sofa table.

Lastly, I found some black/brown shelves in the as-is section and created a door for my wardrobe by connecting them longways and inserting aluminum strips at the seams.

I am really pleased with how everything has turned out so far (still need to finish the wardrobe and hang the door with barn door hardware) and wanted to share the project with you guys.

I'm also including a pic of the work in progress main wall that I just painted with chalkboard paint.

Everything is looking great Alex. We're sure to be bugging you for a House Tour when you're all ready and done with your new home. Thanks for sharing!

Is the room divider on tracks? Does it slide? How is it attached to the ceiling or floor? Looks great, tell me more.

OMG! What a great idea. I would have never thought to make a sofa table/desk out of one of the pieces. Brilliant! I wonder if it took a lot of work getting the parts together and how many people were needed.

Awesome!

Please tell us more about how you attached them. I also love the headboard. Did you make that too?

Alex, this is fantastic! I hit Ikea's as-is almost daily, and I've probably saved thousands of dollars over the last couple years. The numerars and other raw materials are perfect for loft life, with a little engineeriing and imagination...and style. I have four aluminum frosted glass PAX doors that I have hinged together to create a folding screen, among other things. Definitely give us a tour as your place progresses!

Cheers

Such a cool looking apartment. Very nice. The article says those boards were $10 but ikea says they are $50

Thanks everyone for the nice and encouraging complements on my work in progress!

I will try and clear up any confusion and questions on what I did and will hopefully have updated pics soon.

First, the counter tops are normally 100.00 a piece but found them in the as-section listed at 10.00. I did all the work by myself (Which included carrying each 8ft, 100lb plus piece up 3 flights of stairs! Not a good day. As far as how they are connected, I simply stood them on end and since they are almost 2 inches thick and I have cement floors, I was able to balance them. I then attached them using flat thing metal plates from Home Depot on top and on the inside (bedroom side) to pull them flush with each other since they wouldn't be seen. I put four panels across (the living room side) and then two end pieces to form a "u" shape if you were looking down from above. This gave me a recessed area on the bedroom side to slide in the pax wardrobe units. I attached these to the
new wall to aid in stability. Lastly, i put lights on top for an added touch. The wall does not move but there is a 3 ft opening towards the window side of the loft for an entry way. The door was built with Stolemen shelves found in the as is section and with aluminum strips from HD. The door will be hung on a track with barn door hardware so it will eventually slide.

Hope that helps clear things up and again, thanks for all the complements. It's what keeps this site so great.

P.s.-To Laura, thanks and yes I built the bed a few years ago when I was still in Manhattan beach. (Not fun to move that thing.

Alex,
I am starting my own business and will have to do as much DIY as possible for my furniture. Where did you find your chrome legs? Your place looks great. Kuddos to you for such a creative spirit!

Honestly, between this and the bedroom post I am ready to propose marriage for feeling I would never be able to put together something half as awesome. Brilliant work.
