Eric over at Modern Self had a problem which we've heard quite a few times: fugly overhead kitchen lighting. He tackled his lighting problem with some DIY elbow juice and creativity, stretching out some bedroom sheets over a wood frame to create a diffused lighting solution that sure beats the typical fluorescent tubes we see in most rentals...

Great idea -- I did something similar in my old place, using a steel frame and curtain fabric that I put grommets in and tied to the frame.
One word of caution though -- in the summer, I would leave my balcony doors open and little insects would be attracted to the light. As it collected dust and dead bugs, you could see the silhouettes with the lights on and it looked awful. I'd have to regularly take the thing down and vacuum the fabric.
Eventually I did something else that was more low maintenance.
Hopefully, you won't have the same problem!

Ha lightspeed!
I never thought of that!
It's the same principle as those glass canopy lights I had on the ceiling in my college dorm/apartments. They were totally filled with gnats. Those tall halogen dimmer lamps were notorious for that as well.
I wonder if, in this situation, the top could be covered with screen?
