ATLA reader Ina is an
artist with limited budget, so many of her furnishings have to play dual duty. Take for instance her
dual storage and seating solution, using a flat file that stores all of her artwork, while providing extra seating for guests. Wed love to see her find properly fitted cushions and perhaps paint the cabinet itself a more dcor-harmonious colour to really make this idea shine. But we have to commend her for thinking outside the box and making due with whats she got.
thanks for the shout out, gregory! i'll be working on some custom fit, fabric covered, foam cushions for seating. i just got a new sewing machine for my birthday!
Ina,
Great idea and I totally understand. We are students and have little money. I have a cheaply made entertainment center that I got off of Craigslist for free. Our t.v. is tiny and looks rediculous in the space provided for a t.v. So I plan to hack off the part that goes over the t.v. to use as a desk, then the remaining part I plan to use just as you have- as a seat and storage. I plan to sew a cushion, which I'll probably velcro to it. Now if I can only get my hands on a saw...
I think double duty is right on, but those flat files are darn expensive, and I have seen them ruined by pople sitting on them. They are not designed to stand up to the weight across that large expanse of a top, and will sag. It totally screws up the top drawer.
Just some friendly advice. Otherwise, I think it looks great as a seat, too. Just keep an eye on it!
I'm sure you could just get a sheet of steel or a piece of mdf to sit on top to distribute the weight across the frame of the cabinet to save it from its saggy demise and still keep its dual duties happening. I like. Well done.
