Free Neighborhood Produce: FallenFruit.org

060208fallenfruit01.jpgOne would assume the bounty above was purchased from the local farmer's market. But everything shown was actually harvested by my girlfriend and our friend Saelee in the surrounding streets of Silver Lake this weekend, including carob, lavender, passion fruit, apples and oranges...

060208fallenfruit03.jpgFallenFruit.org is a site that provides neighborhood maps of Silver Lake, Echo Park, Sante Fe, Hancock Park and MidWilshire, plotting out all the locations of publicly available produce hanging over onto sidewalks for legal harvest (we do recommend if you do see an owner, to politely ask...they might even let you nab a few more fruits on their side of the fence).

060208fallenfruit02.jpgAnd if you're so inclined, you can make your own fruit map to share following these steps. We've already found a huge mulberry tree ripe with sweet berries and are keeping our eyes out for ripening figs and other stone fruit (with hopes for avocado in the near future). Sure makes the morning and evening jog an even healthier endevour to stick to!

I wrote Fallen Fruit a couple years back telling them about the Carob trees in my area (Hancock Park adjacent). I should check and see if they have that info up there. We have soooooo much carob, we could start a carob factory. The stupid squirrels leave half-eaten overripe pods on our cars -- staining them for all of eternity.

Years ago, when my father had fallen on hard times, he would pick fruit off of the trees in his area. He would get enough bounty that he was able to eat very well, considering (he was homeless). He knew where to pick and got mad when others caught on in his area, because that meant less for him.

Whoa you've got to post up that Passion Fruit location! how was the flavor? LOL I looked @ a place for rent in HP (highland park) and it had a giant passionfruit vine in the bag. The owner had no idea what they were! I get Kumquats from a neighbors tree. I wish i had a lime source!

Interesting...

In the UK, the owner of the plant owns everything on it, even if its growing outside the fence or haning over the sidewalk - its illegal to pick stuff off peoples trees

You are allowed to cut back branches that overhang your property from someone elses garden but you must give them back whatever you cut off as they own it

Do you worry about what they might be spraying on the trees or what might be in the ground in that area? I always assume that land near a street has a pretty good lead content in the soil from pre lead-free gasoline days. I wouldn't make a habit of eating things that are grown as an ornamental.

My parents planted a LOT of fruit trees in my childhood home and kids would often try to get some of the fruit by throwing rocks at it (the walls to the house/garden were very high) Little did they know there were children (me and siblings) playing behind the wall....

Had just asked they would have gotten a big bag of peaches/guavas/avocados/apples/mangos/oranges. Instead they got screamed at for throwing rocks at children.

Please ask before you take...you might make friends (and get more) instead!

BTW speaking of fruit: Guadalajara's (in Mexico) sidewalks right now are full of citrus and guavas...yup, on the sidewalk, instead of just shade trees, they've grown lemons, limes, oranges, guavas...you name it! it's all on the street!
