Good Neighbors: When A Tree Falls in Pasadena...

031708_treefall.jpgLast night, we had a HUGE wind storm in Pasadena. It was pretty intense (I had to take my puppy out three times in it, and kept looking at the electrical wires hanging above my head and telling her to hurry it up). Because the wind was so loud, I didn't even hear the tree fall (insert joke here). So, when my neighbor rang my doorbell this morning with references to tree maintenance people, he got to witness my initial reaction. "You didn't even know, huh?" he laughed while I just sputtered in shock.

031708_treefall2.jpgWith a great deal of patience, my neighbor showed me past invoices of people he's used before to maintain his trees; and his opinion of what I should do. "Call the city first, there's a street lamp that's been knocked down so there might be exposed wires. Plus, the tree is in the road, so it might be under their jurisdiction. But if you do have to call your own maintenance people, here are three different companies."

Now, while I'm so happy and relieved that this huge tree didn't sway the other way and crush my house; I'm equally happy and relieved that I live next door to someone who truly is a good--no, GREAT--neighbor.

Holy crap. Well, I'm glad you (and puppy) and your house are safe. Good luck, and you're lucky to have such a nice neighbor.

You may already know this, but you may be able to save the tree; they can be righted (may need to lop some volume off the top) so long as the roots aren't too damaged. My family went through a hurricane & I hadn't realized you could just prop a tree back up!

My first thought was poor tree, so it would be great if you could save it. Glad to hear no one was hurt as well.

Grace, the same thing happened to us a few months back during a bad wind storm, except the tree was in our back yard. We never heard it fall. I only noticed that there was more light coming into my daughter's bedroom but thought nothing more of it. My neighbor rang our doorbell and asked if we had seen the tree that had fallen over (I thought he was talking about some young palms that we still had in pots so at first I thought he was being overly worried) and told me to go look out back. Thank goodness it didn't fall in the direction of the house (it was close to the house) or onto my neighbor's house. The only casualty besides the tree was the fence. How similar an experience tho!

I am happy to hear you are safe, and my second thought was can they get that thing back in it's spot? Good to have nice neighbors, too.

Keep in mind, I'm the one who can't take care of plants unless they are succulents or an African Violet I've had to corral with a paper fence to keep my kitty away from it, so whaddo I know about replanting trees. It was really windy on Sat at the beach--I think it was steady at 35 mph with bigger gusts coming off the water, so the mountain areas were probably worse.

Who were the three companies? I've got a big branch on my roof from that very same storm.

Couper:

They were...

Safe & Beautiful Tree Co. (Gabriel) - 818.404.9697
All Tree Service (Gil) - 877.ACE.9800
Harnisch Tree Care - 626.444.7997

I used Safe & Beautiful, and they did an AWESOME job. Basically cleaned up the whole site and leveled the ground in about an hour and half. Plus they came earlier than Gabriel estimated.
