Good Product, Bad Packaging: Method Dish Soap

atla110707_MethodDishSoap.jpg
We love companies that go that extra mile, and Method has always made a concerted effort to combine the philosophy of good products with beautiful packaging. Their products are the sort you keep around even after it's all used up, refilling or reusing them because they're well designed products. So it comes with disappointment that Method has dropped the ball with a recent design change.

We've been purchasing Method dishwashing soap since the launch of the company (we mail ordered a box of four upon first seeing the unique Karim Rashid designed squeeze bottle). We still have a couple saved under the sink because we just love the shape. Then came another redesign, perhaps created for the mass market retail outlets that Method has eventually penetrated. Rashid's unusual reverse teardrop dispenser was replaced with a more traditional squeeze bottle; not unattractive, but admittedly not a design that elicited the "oooh, what is that?!" that the Rashid design did. Usability was improved with the second iteration, with a smaller shape, and it was less prone to leak like the Rashid design. The Rashid design was also very large and a little unwieldy, but the pinched neck was its saving grace, allowing a tighter grip. Perhaps we learned to live with the initial design because of the visual and tactile joy it created.

But recently, Method has literally slipped from our good graces with their recent packaging design change for their dish soaps. This new elongated tear drop is striking, but has a fatal flaw: it regularly slips out of our hands when squeezed. And when we say slip out, we mean it shoots out with notable speed, crashing into our sink or dishes. The curvilinear shape becomes extremely slippery when wet, and when squeezed with wet hands, the bottle's non-existent tactile grip makes for an adventurous dish washing experience. This is unfortunately a case where the designer failed to test their design in actual use. We hope Method goes back to the drawing board with this one. For now, we're just bringing back the old design and refilling it, because washing dishes is a pain in the neck as it is.

i concur. so i dumped my method mistress and went back to my wife, mrs. meyers. she's a simpler, more old fashioned dish soap bottle.

Nice observation--I was very afraid you were criticizing it for some visual design flaw or that it was only 99% biodegradable.

I try to live green but sometimes the judgement calls individuals make are just too much.

Criticizing the slippery-ness of a bottle is downright perfect and a good call.

It must have "slipped" past Method's testing stage.

I don't know, I had the Karim bottle and I hated it. I found it difficult to use and it leaked all over my counter. I also didn't think it was refillable. The appeal for me was the cucumber scented soap.

I'm also on the Mrs. Meyers bandwagon now.

I put my method dishsoap into another container anyway, so I don't notice this problem. I actually like the design better than the karim ones.

I disliked the original Karim design too. Sure it looked pretty (the reason I bought it), but it was too big for the little ledge next to my faucet. I couldn't actually put it on the counter because it leaked.
Also the soap was REALLY harsh on my hands. Argh.

Method's designs always draw me in, but the actual products usually leave me underwhelmed. The bathtub tile cleaner doesn't and it has a long-lingering odd smell... supposed to be peppermint, but more like Pepto-mint. I agree with the other Mrs. Meyer's fanatics. The smells are great, the stuff works and the packaging doesn't leak. Now, if the price would just come down a bit...

I have always been happy with all of my Method purchases *until* this dish soap -- the bottle is nearly impossible to open with wet hands AND that particular one that you have pictured stinks to high heaven. It is some holiday edition called Hollyberry and I grabbed it without smelling it in the store -- it is awful.

Method's laundry soap is the best ever, and so are their dryer sheets (although I tend to use TJ's lavender sachets).

Maybe it's an effort on Method's part, for you to just buy their refill dish soap and fill your OWN soap dispenser. :)

Totally agree. I have it and not only is it hard to hold on to, but the spout leaks everywhere and is difficult to clean off. I like the idea AT ran about using olive oil bottles as containers.

st@cy: great reminder...we use used olive oil bottles for our shampoo and liquid bath soaps!

I agree: the bottle on the far right is constantly gooked up, making it nearly impossible even for my big, strong boyfriend to squeeze detergent out. As cutely humbling it is to see him try, the design is wholly impractical. I'm looking for a better, permanent soap dispenser.....any ideas?

I bought Method tub and tile, daily shower and the all purpose and I was so disappointed with them. The tub and tile cleaner did not work well on soap scum resulting in me almost passing out trying to scrub the tub.... the daily shower spray smelled like rotten food! (oops sorry!!) and the all purpose (lavender) smelled wonderful but did not work really well on kitchen stains. I just wish they would do something to make these products more effective. I love their packaging, and some of their stuff smells divine.

i bought this dish soap at vons, and when i unloaded my groceries from my cart onto the checkout stand to pay, everything was covered in dish soap. the checker told me that the method dish soap always does that because the square top comes off the bottle too easily. stupidly, i just grabbed another one (desiring the enchanting cucumber smell). by the time i got home, all my groceries were re-covered in dish soap. this product design is truly awful.

p.s. i also bought the shaving cream cube its so cute but so difficult to squeeze anything out!

The Karim bottle leaked and the actual detergent isn't so great. I could clean more dishes with Dawn than with twice the amount of Method.

I actually wrote Method an email complaining about the new dishsoap container! A nice person emailed me back and said they were in the process of redesigning it AGAIN, and that they have received this complaint from many otherwise satisfied customers. I love the Method dishsoap, I still use it, just put it in another bottle. I have tried others but none works as well for me. Mrs. Meyers is ok but I find the scents to be too strong. Also I find the pricing to be a little ridiculous. Target used to carry this great line called Good Clean Home and I LOVED that stuff. I was really disappointed when they discontinued it.

Robin, was Good Clean Home the same ones who made CLEAN NOTE dish detergent?? If so, i wish they would come back.
I just bought a discontinued bottle and fell in love. I'm so sad that Target has finally run out. :0(

Hate the new bottle as well. Because it was so hard to open while doing dishes, I left the top up... well, that has now caused the soap to clog! It takes all of my strength to get anything out!

Love the new bottle, and I've never had it slip out of my hand...and I'm a chick with smallish girly hands, too.

the spout kind of sucks too...it has a little well surrounding the opening so when you turn it right side up after squirting, excess soap collects there and creates a wicked mess. However, I've never once had it slip out of my hands.

I do LOVE the cucumber scent though. Maybe if I get annoyed with it enough, I'll just get my own squirt bottle to refill and be done with it.

I thought I was the only one who couldn't hold on to this bottle! I love the cucumber scent and it lasts forever, but geez...the bottle is slippery and as others have said the spout gunks up.

I'm glad to hear their redesigning it, and that I'm not the only one who can't hold on to this soap bottle!

i actually do love the shape of the new bottle, and haven't had any slippage problems. but it does become hard after awhile to squeeze the soap out, and the container gets all dented. and i must say, the grapefruit scent is absolutely HORRID.

I almost let out a little "Aack!" at work because I just got back from a Target run and bought the hollyberry dishsoap! But I bought it because I am deeply in love with the scent (closest thing to Gap's Holiday scent--anyone know where I can get more of that??).

Good to be warned, glad there isn't a problem with the actual product that I have to worry about, but will warn DH!

I have never closed my lid. It does not clog, leak or slip. Could this be a bad batch that you got? Also, if you liked the Karim bottle methodhome still sells it.

Had so damn much trouble with that loathsome Karim bottle, couldn't dispense soap without herculean efforts that were best put into scrubbing pans. Haven't had any problems with this new bottle so I'm surprised to hear these reviews. Oddness.

I LOVE the Hollyberry scent! It's awesome! So is the shower cleaner (ylang ylang.) It's a total "to each their own" when it comes to scents. I personally am SO sick to high Heaven of the "big three." America seems to be in forever LOVE with pink grapefruit, cucumber, lavender! I mean, that's all anyone makes! And even Method, over time, has diluted their scents down to, mostly these three. So whenever a new scent is debuted, I purchase it with glee! (knowing it'll be discontinued soon, as is usually the case, cause it isn't pink grapefruit, cucumber, lavender.)

I've used the old dish soap containers FOREVER, and the one I'm using right now is the first one that leaks a little on the counter top. (But I also let it sit for over a year, before using it again; as it was a holiday scent, and I stopped using it for a while.) What I've discovered is, if it seems more difficult to squeeze, you can simply run your finger along the inside of the dispensing hole, and remove what's clogging it, and it'll work fine again! Also, the lid does come off, allowing you to refill, or clean the interior of the lid, as well, for easier squeezing. I'm using the old style teardrop version, by the way.

Make that shower spray (ylang ylang), not shower cleaner (which is the eucalyptus mint.)
