Grand Daddy Hotel's Airstream Penthouse Park

052009_GDExt.jpgHere's an interesting concept: The Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa has re-imagined the concept of "penthouse," thanks to seven gleaming, vintage Airstream trailers perched on the roof of the hotel. Each trailer was decorated by seven artists/designers from Cape Town, resulting in a whimsical home-away-from-home that celebrates Africa's beautiful skies and Table Mountain view with the idyllic American camping experience. Take a look at each themed trailer below the jump!

Each trailer comes with its own garden / yard and mailbox; and it comes fully equipped with air conditioning, hot and cold running water, functioning showers and toilets. Another perk? Enjoy summer nights outside watching a movie with other Airstream dwellers. A few more exterior shots:

Trailer 1: Afro Funk by Carla Soudien
Inspired by the street fashion of Cape Town

Trailer 2: Love of Lace by Tracy Lynch
Utilizing her favorite color pink, Lynch created an extremely feminine boudoir.

Trailer 3: Dorothy by Sarah Pratt
Fine artist Pratt stuck to a theme inspired by the Wizard of Oz's heroine's dress and carried it through to the smallest detail. Every inch of this trailer is covered in light blue and white polka dots!

Trailer 4: Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Mark and Joe Stead
Another fairy tale, another inspiration. This cheeky trailer can appeal to both families (it's the only one that comes with a bunk bed) and naughty adults (the closet is stocked with plushy bear suits).

Trailer 5: The Ballad of John & Yoko by Tasmin Relly, Cara Rose and Chloe Townsend
This group of creatives (artist Relly, textile designer Rosa, accessories designer Townsend) dedicated their trailer to the most iconic couple in popular music. Paying tribute to the Lennon and Ono's 1969 Bed-In for Peace, this trailer has a bed that takes up 3/4 of the entire space with a few simple accessories: a guitar, some records, a few books...

Trailer 6: Pleasantville by Liam Mooney
Mooney, the creative director of WhatiftheWorld as well as the creative director of the Penthouse Park project, decorated his trailer as the utopian 50's style home. Taking cues from popular colors and fabrics from that era, Mooney recreated the look and feel right down to the details--the bookcase is stocked with cheesy romantic novels of the 50s and wall ducks!

Trailer 7: Earthcote Moontides by Susan Woodley and Brigitte Dewberry
This dreamy trailer is all about taking "a soul journey." Decked out in pearly, luminescent textures and muted earth tones, this trailer is every dreamer's slice of heaven.

This is darned cool.

For something closer to home, the KOA RV Park located in the parking lot of Circus-Circus on the Las Vegas Strip rents Airstream Safaris perma-parked there - starting at $45 nite.

All of them make me feel claustrophobic. If they were placed in a park or campsite, it would be one thing, but why would I go to a hotel roof to pretend I'm camping?

this is perfect for someone who is afraid of camping and loves cool interiors (me!) my favorite is... afro-funk.

I pick Goldilocks and the Three Bears mainly because of the three cute bear heads.
