apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Hot Enough For Ya?

heat_wave_1.jpgMonday was a scorcher, and today is supposed to follow suit: "very hot with the temperature approaching the record of 97 set in 1984 with a full day of sunshine". Thus, I'm already looking to purchase a secondary small room window air conditioner in advance of the summer heat waves and the sweating mobs that follow.

Last year I painfully learned that the early birds do indeed get the worm, while late buzzards such as myself get heat set perms. There were moments, during heat induced delirium, when I believed I was living inside an Easy Bake Oven, so this year I'm going to nip it in the bud and prepare in advance. This mini-heatwave is a good reminder of what summer has in store for us. I've already installed two room darkening roller shades, hopefully easing the rise in interior temperature and decreasing the need for air conditioning. But it's only May and we're seeing triple digit temperatures. I hate to say it, but this year might be another rolling blackout year....

Wow...I was just thinking this morning about picking up a vintage metal fan from one of those mall decorator stores (Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardlyware). I haven't found any modern fans that look cool (anybody know a good one?).

My reaction is to get something that looks like it was snagged from the set of Indiana Jones or 1941.

Any good post-war fans out there in production?

Try googling Cinni-- They last forever, and they work great.

I recently installed double layered honeycomb shades. These new generation of "blinds" are great because they block up to 65% of the heat, but still allow the light to come through. I too cannot forget the insane heat we had last summer and so bought them a few months ago from Home Depot.
