apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

How do we get to your house?

atla-021408-svwil01.jpgWe love having guests over and we're careful to give them good directions. We remember too well our first days here and how we learned the hard way that there were two places where San Vicente intersected with Wilshire; they cross in Brentwood and at the eastern edge of Beverly Hills.

In fact, there were two San Vicente Boulevards, one in each city! We later learned that there was a Los Angeles and a Beverly Hills part of Robertson Boulevard and that South Cahuenga is on the other side of the 101 from North Cahenga. Share with us the quirky directions that guests need to know when they're coming to your house.

I used to live above a store on Lincoln Blvd. That was hard to explain.. especially to food delivery people. No one could ever figure out how to get up there. I gave up and started meeting people in front of the store on the sidewalk.

I took the bus exclusivley from age 13 to 22 - Whenever I gave directions, I rarely included street names. It was all landmarks - I live on the block with a Virgin Mary mural, cow and perfectly spherical watermelon, 1 block west of the purple building with purple awenings, on the side with the Taquito wearing a sombrero.

My address is on Gough Street, but the entrance to the driveway is on Ellis - some experienced drivers know this, but many don't and current navigation systems including Yahoo Maps have you going in circles to get to my place - so I never know if the car I've ordered to take me to the airport will pull up at the curb, in the parking lot, or ever...

Get in the right lane and turn left on Holgate. No, trust me, the right lane goes left...

I live on WEST Valencia, which is a totally different street than Valencia in the same city. My apartment complex is tiny with only 8 units so it gets lost among the other buildings. Also, they painted the building a couple years ago but never re-hung the street numbers, so I have to give the address and then tell people that "it's the one with ivy and a baby palm tree out front."

Every time, people go to the complex half a block down with the ivy sans palm tree and I get a call and I have to go out and fetch them off the street.

ah, the dreaded twin drangon. Being in Korea town, I have an infinite suppy of questionable english signs. I love it! There's a store near us who takes "Food Estamps" and a "For Woman Dae Spaa". The Dae Spaa has had a "Gran Opening" sign on it for the past 4 years.

You know where Jumbo's Clown Room is right...?

Hilarious when one member of a couple is like 'Hell yeah!' and the other is like 'I don't think so, what's that?'

The directions aren't tricky but we always route people in from a specific side of the neighborhood even if it's a little out of the way. The other side is horrifying.

My building is set back from the street, so I always have to tell people that I live at the end of the walkway next to the music academy.

Arc, you just made me snort, then chortle, then belly laugh.
My best moment was getting confused while driving up the east coast from North Carolina to New Jersey to visit a girl I was dating in college. Every road to get to her house was some offshoot of I-95, which they have named "295" or "495." Try saying this over the phone and see who will actually get there-- "Take 95 north to 295 then 495 back to 95, and exit 17." It should also be noted that she was referring to exit #17, which is WAY different than exiting at Route 17. Uuuuugggg.

I used to say I lived 1/2 way between Dylan's Candy Bar and Serendipity 3 when I lived in NYC. AKA Sugar Buzz Heaven/Hell....Now between the marina and the Pacific Ocean, closer to the ocean.
