We love tiny secret streets and inner courtyards and their promises of stolen kisses, hidden treasures, a secret rendez-vous. Here in LA, the city of wide boulevards and open freeways, we have nothing comparable to the hidden rambles of other pedestrian-oriented cities. Or do we?
Lately, in the interest of seeing LA from a new perspective, we've taken to walking the distance from our house to our friend's house. The slog across Wilshire Boulevard, down Fairfax and over San Vicente seemed interminable. Until we discovered the "way" streets...

In my dream life, I live right there

i lived on orange street just parallel to wilshire where it meets san vicente. i hated driving the short short distance to the place were i worked (near the beverly connection), so i'd walk one of those ways parallel to la cienega and i loved how safe and kind of pretty it was. coming from nyc, i was always amazed at how i was the ONLY pedestrian on the street every morning.

Toronto Island has a similar, pedestrian only vibe on its east side. It's a park, but it has residents, and their streets are lovely little overgrown paths, with names. It's wonderful.

Beautiful post. Made me smile and think about my secret Los Angeles.

as an LA-er living temporarily in DC, i love the fact that I am forced to walk practically everywhere... but i still miss the beach.

Could something like this pleeeeease become a semi-regular feature, a la "complex love"? It's so cool to see a different side of LA.
