Latest Trend? Rustic Farm Look

100208_rustic.jpgAfter receiving an onslaught of catalogues for the "latest fall trends," we started noticing that more and more mainstream home furnishing places are pushing the modern-yet-rustic farmhouse look (or, as one of our friends put it, "Little Danish House on the Prairie"). It may have started with Pottery Barn and the Sundance Home catalogues awhile back plus the rising popularity of Shaker furniture--well, we have to say that we're more than a little intrigued. Perhaps the downward spiraling of our economy is nudging our tastes to go back to the basics? Who knows. What do you think of this style?

I like it! It's such a simple and modern look, that still gives ya that warm and fuzzy feel of farmhouse and rustic. However, I don't think this style would work in just any house.

I love the look, however, when I saw the table and benches in the store they looked cheap. The wood isnt solid. It is all veneer. If you like the look, check out Crate and Barrel's Big Sur table and bench, which is 100% solid hardwood.

I'm not buying it.

The folks who are secure in their wealth and still have money to spend on home furnishings aren't going to be buying clunky farm tables from West Elm or Pottery Barn. If that's their style, their interior designer will be purchasing either real antiques or exclusive items from the Designer Showrooms.

...and the people who are at risk of losing their homes/jobs/retirement investments aren't going to be buying new furniture for a while either.

"The wood isnt solid. It is all veneer. "

Geex - If you really wanted this look you could go to Home Depot and get a few 2x4's and make your own table and pair of benches for the price of one bench from West Elm.

How long is the lead time for the catalogues and mass merchants? If they knew last year that the Dow would take such a nose dive, what else did they know a year ago?

um...yellow furniture is a trend...rustic farmhouse isn't a trend...my whole first apartment was all wood, iron, and rustic materials..it overlooked a lake so it was screaming out for natural materials. BUT my furniture was all solid wood...no veneer :P

Never really cared for that chunky unfinished wood look. The color of the cushion goes well with the wood but not my style. It doesn't look that comfortable either.

This is everything my hippie father ever built for furniture, except my dad's stuff was solid wood.

It's sitting in this weird valley for me - vaguely nostalgic, but I never actually liked the look, much, its just my childhood. I wouldn't buy it and my dad would implode if I paid West Elm prices for it.

Little Danish House On The Prairie - I love that term, though, and apparently my parents were Rustic Modern all along!
