Loft Is Love: Playing With Muted and Bold Colors

100908_cristinaLiving.jpgThis gorgeous Barcelona loft designed by Cristina Rodriguez may be a few years old, but we can't get over how effortlessly--and unexpectedly--the muted hues play with the bold colors in this huge 2 bedroom loft. This photo of the living area doesn't give the place justice--trust us: take a look at the rest of this 3,700 sq ft. home...

This building with its beautiful brick work was actually an old textile factory before it got converted into seventeen loft apartments. We absolutely love when conversions retain the details from its former self as it adds history and character to each home.

100908_cristinaKitch2.jpgOn one end of this long apartment is the fully modernized kitchen with sleek appliances and almost seamless cabinets. But right in the middle of this sea of stainless steel storage are four dramatic, handmade wooden chairs.

100908_cristinaKitch.jpgSpeaking of details, we love the column separating the kitchen form the den area--the scrollwork is beautiful. The relaxing den area is a nice mix of seating options from the classic Jacobsen Egg chair in a muted purple to more classic armchairs covered in hardwearing denim slipcovers.

100908_cristinaOffice.jpgOn the opposite side of the den area is the home office. Beyond that, by the kitchen, is another, more casual dining area with matching denim slipcovered chairs.

100908_cristinaMaster.jpgThe bedrooms are separated from the living areas by floor-to-ceiling black drapes. The muted purple hue of the Egg chair in the den gets punched up to a deeper violet for the master bedroom. The closet area is organized with custom shelving and is easily hidden with by beige curtains. The bathroom is a step up from the sleeping area.

100908_cristinaBathNook.jpgThe bathroom has its own color profile while still remaining relevant to the rest of the home: Carrying the warm beige from the master bedroom, this nook in the bath area introduces a new accent color of bright red-orange with glossy black and darker woodgrains.

100908_cristinaBath.jpgThe sink floats in the middle of the partition between the bathtub area and the shower.

100908_cristinaGuestRed.jpgAnd just in case there any overnight guests, the second bedroom at the very end gets its own wing--and dramatic color scheme. This shade of fire-engine red comes close to the saturated red-orange of the bathroom, and we like how it gets toned down with steely grey bedding and black drapes for privacy.

Nice example of how neutrals can create an exciting color palette. It's beautiful, though the red room seems to turn the color philosophy of the rest of the space upside-down.

The only people I knew who had a bright red bedroom got divorced. It was a bitter divorce. I always wondered...

I really like the subdued palette in the first few images, but there's something about the space that bothers me:

There's an idea here about separate rooms that doesn't seem fully-fleshed out. When I scan across the space in the images, I see different sets of furniture that don't appear to relate to one another aesthetically. I have a feeling that had the designer stayed away from sets, this might not be as pronounced. It could also be argued that the many of the pieces selected just don't relate to each other well. The selection process of the pieces appears to be a bit scattered.

Then again, they could've just built a few floor to ceiling walls. I'm really digging a few of the groupings (particularly the dining area and the lounging area in the bathroom, though odd). It just seems the sight line to other, dissonant "rooms" would be distracting, like sitting down for dinner with friends in such particular, almost-formal setting and hearing, "Hey, did you get a good price on those three tulip chairs over there by the computer?!"

Irony of ironies, I was just hunting for a holiday rental in Barcelona, and this place came up. You can rent it for 125 Euros per night per person (out of our budget for our family of 4, even if our not-quite 3 year old doesn't count).

I actually think that the vacation rental site has better pictures.
