We often find that a small kitchen leaves little room for a place to sit down and eat a meal. Most folks working with a small cooking area will take a meal to the couch (and give up on incorporating kitchen seating). So when we spotted Caroline's DIY countertop bar, we had to share.
By simply painting and installing wood shelving from IKEA, Caroline makes great use of a tiny space. Instead of having to stand in the kitchen waiting for the pasta to boil, she can plop down on a stool and enjoy a sip of tea and a magazine. Great idea for those of us who never thought a dining area was possible in a small kitchen.

its like a eating through shelf.. there must be a coffee table instead.

Ugh. No thanks. I'd rather not stare into a wall while I eat. Plus, if you use that yellow chair, you'd be bumping into the cart/shelf by the stove every time you sat down or got up.

Dining? Snacking, maybe, but I'd still rather not.

I think this is cute and cozy little nook. For one person it would be OK. Not sure if it is conducive to conversation for two people, however.

It's a cute kitchen, but that eating area screams "Penalty Box" for me - You know, where your Mom would make you sit for hours facing the wall waiting for your Dad to come home after you nearly burned the house down?

Good idea, but I think a little cafe table or a teeny square table in that corner would work about as well and might look nicer & seem "friendlier".
Cute kitchen. I like how she did that white shelf and black panel over the black & white stove. Tiny white kitchens are so inviting.

I take it that back door doesn't open? I think I'd rather have that Ikea wall-mounted fold down table.

I think it's really cute for one person. I would go a bit further and get the vase and that box off the table - hang them from the wall.

It looks romantic to forge a space for two in this tiny area! very nice!

If you are super opposed to eating in the living room, then this is a great solution. A bowl of cereal would be great there, but not really dinner... It is a good use of what would have been wasted space though. And the tight squeeze would work as a built-in weight monitor.

Long term solution: Ditch the gigantic stove, replace it with half-width kitchen cabinets with flat, built-in hot plates on the top arranged as 1x3 or 1x4 (instead of 2x2). Mount a shelf on the wall above for a small electrical oven or microwave, depending on your needs.
That would make room for a small, wall-mounted table instead of the shelves.

I think it looks really nice for a small kitchen. It's better than no table at all. I see the point that whoever sits in the yellow chair is kinda forced there until the other person gets up - but if you just sat down for dinner and you had the sense to get the things you need before it is served, you shouldn't need to get back up until dinner is over.

I think I'd rather see bar stools that could be stored under the countertop than the chairs there.
