Look! A Shelf Over A Door

atla-090408-doorshelf.jpgOur recent house tour, Greg and Laura's Space Maximizing Bungalow, was chock-full of ideas that any one with space challenges would find helpful. One of the simplest is one that we ourselves used recently...

Whether over a doorway that connects room or, in our case, over a closet door in an oddly shaped walk-in closet, a narrow shelf can hold items in an out of the way but easily accessible place.

i like that idea for the bathroom- to hold extra towels.

I did that in my last apartment that had the perfect door alcove like that. I put decorative storage boxes up there, it was great.

i have one over my bathroom door. you gotta try it yourself, it's great! just don't store your hydrogen peroxide and extra meds and witch hazel up there. heat rises and it gets surprisingly warm right at the ceiling (more than you'd think).

I love this idea, but it works best if either you store things up there you don't need to get to too often, or you're tall and so it's within easy reach

Oooh, will keep this in mind for my next apartment. Wish I could do this in my closet right now!

It's one of those things that's so obvious it's painful, but nobody really thinks of.

I've done this, too. It's fabulous.

Personally, I recommend against storing extra towels in a steamy bathroom. But with a few dollars worth of attractive boxes it's a great place for extra shampoos and beauty items.

I like the idea - because its useful-- but I don't like the way it looks.

I love this. I'm planning these for over the doors in the tiny bath and the laundry room.

I don't like having "stuff" around the sink, so baskets on a shelf is better.

And we're tall, so we'd rather reach than stoop.

This is a great idea! I wish I had a nice alcove like in the photo though.
