Look!: Canyon School Font

canyon-font-02-07-.jpgEvery time we see this sign for the Canyon Elementary School we think it's super chic.

While we don't know much about the charter school itself, we wonder if the super sleek signage has subliminally seeped into the creative minds of the school’s students. Or do alumni associate their hatred of school with the lettering, creating a negative Pavlovian response when walking through a D.W.R.?

Uh... um... wasn't that the lettering every hastily-built-for-the-boom school had in my misspent youth? Since the school dates back quite a ways, I'm thinking that lettering may not be retro-chic so much as genuinely old (and clearly, back in style).

The architecture is certainly giving me a flashback to flat gray buildings, a certain shade of institutional green, and some truly vile cafeteria chocolate-peanut butter bars.

My daughter goes here, so I am there every day. Interestingly, you almost never see the sign unless you are driving by - it's a bit hidden. The rest of the campus is a mish mash of classic California aging "open plan school" desing where every classroom is connected by a running overhangs, and ugly trailers put up for more space. The most interesting design element here is the old schoolhouse, now the library, dating from 1893?. Most kids love the school, as it is a small neighborhood charter school with lots of parental money to pick up where LAUSD leaves off.

I went to Canyon School back in the day. I also love that type and the design of the school itself. That sinage has seeped into me for the better.
