apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! Challenging Space, Great Room

100308-balance01.jpgIn preparation for the Fall Cure, we spent last night looking through some of the pictures on the Apartment Therapy Flickr pages. This picture caught our eye because, despite the many challenges of this space, AT reader Suzie Goombs has managed to create a pleasing and appealing room.

Look closely at the room itself. The door's in awkward place, there's only one wall, it's a modern building with no molding, the ceiling isn't particularly high BUT despite those things (or maybe because of them), Suzie's created a space that I want to hang out in. She's done it with a good eye for balance -- of colour, of texture, of form -- and probably in a way that didn't break her bank, with a mix of classic pieces and fun touches (she's reminded me to hit up Ikea for a sheepskin throw for my corner chair). This is the core of what AT's about. Working with what you have to create a livable space; turning your challenges into assets. Join us in the Cure and see your space transform.

I love the blue chair. Where do I get one, or maybe two?

Wow, thanks guys! It definitely is a strangely laid-out space to work with and I really appreciate your thumbs up :)

nester - the blue chair was bought off ebay and is vintage. I would looove to find another as well because unfortunately my cats think the blue nubby fabric (original!) makes a great scratching post.

I love this look. I suffer from a similar apartment living room layout. Suzie, can you tell me the dimensions of the room? Thanks!

What about the fabric on the teal chair?? Did you purchase that or is it vintage - it is gorgeous.

A little naked, still.

A wall-mounted shelving unit would be great on the door-wall, or perhaps a custom made book shelf? This room needs height.

The window treatment looks a little dated and out of sync with the furnishings, to my eye.

The grid patterned neutral rug isn't great with the parquet floors-- clashy.

very nice! love the side chair as well. @nester -- R&B's grace chair or quinn chair looks similar.

Great looking coffee table. Does anyone know of where I could find one like this? (LA area)

I agree with the above comment. Naked, dated window treatment, a rug that clashes. The items are well distributed, I just do not like them much.

Great space!
the wall with the door could use something though...

veggiesho - the room is a little less than 10x13

tropicalisland1 - the coffee table is a vintage Paul McCobb I found on ebay for $700 less than what 1stdibs was asking!

alexis - the teal chair is vintage as well with original upholstery. again, found on ebay.

La loca & Shirley - I couldn't agree more about the rug. I plan on replacing it just as soon as I finish paying for Vet school ;)
