Forgive us, when we think of diy projects we tend to think about plants since they're often a cheap way to brighten up a space (also we love growing things), so we admit, we've had plants on the brain this week. So remember when we blogged about that really small space succulent garden? Well we're thinking of trying out this diy windowsill planter and recreating that little garden inside the house:
We spotted this great, simple diy windowsill planter on kalani kordus' flickr site. Using an aluminum gutter mounted to the inside of the window sill with sheet metal screws (sealing the holes with silicon culk), they made this sweet little window planter that looks modern and useful. Great for a small space since it means that planter isn't taking up any surface space.

Sweet!

Pretty! We have rather narrow window ledges and I've been looking for a way to fix up an indoor herb garden. Looks like this could be the ticket.

how did you make it?

If you've got windows that open from the bottom, though, you'll need to leave room to get your fingers in and lift the sill.
(Still, gorgeous.)

You don't lift a sill - you open a sash...
...and you could always install a small handle at the top of the inner sash to open it - which would be easier with or without one of these and help prevent breaking the applied dividers in modern windows.

that is so cute! unfortunately, all our windows are sliding glass doors, so i can't do this in my own space.

I love succulents but they don't love me...I can't seem to keep them alive...sigh. I either overwater or under-water them.

Olivia--one of my tricks is I water them well and then let them completely dry out over the course of a week and then water them well. And make sure that the water can drain out the bottom so the roots don't rot!

Super cute, but anyone trying this should make sure to watch the watering carefully, since there is no drainage using the gutters. Stay to the side of underwatering so the roots don't rot. I might try this on my narrow front porch ledge!
