We're still on our adventure in the Bay Area and spotted this great solution at our friend Evan's new apartment. What used to be a narrow niche near the entryway (probably for a small table and mirror) has now been adapted to fit his perpetual cap-wearing lifestyle...
While this may look like custom built-in shelves, this "hat rack" is actually an Elfa shelving unit from the Container Store (an example above) that Evan had from his old apartment. The reasons we love this solution: he found an unconventional spot to use something he already had; it's visually appealing (especially for his line of work as a clothing designer for his streetwear label Adapt); and it's organized in such a way that it makes his daily routine of picking a cap to wear before heading out easy.
Additionally, we could see this same solution being used multiple ways, such as storing shoes in the bottom shelves or a sleek inbox tray to hold mail for a more conventional landing strip.
looks awesome!!

I made that gray on gray hat with the white and orange patch on it for our client, Truth (American Legacy Foundation) back in '05. Funny to see it on someone's shelf over 3 years later.
