Look: File Cabinet Bed

atla-gtdbed.jpg

Designer Tobias Wong made due from 1998 till 2003 in an apartment where space was at such a premium, he decided to fashion a bed out of a simple piece of plywood, five steel filing cabinets and a futon mattress. There's something admirable about small space solutions like this, where spaces and surfaces play dual role naturally. [via LifeClever]

I wonder if those filing cabinets were actually full?

I like the pattern of the different colors. Gives me an idea for storage in my own place. Thanks.

My childhood bed was similar: my dad took a bunch of cardboard bankers box drawers, slapped a piece of plywood on top and then the mattress.

My bed for years was a mattress on a sheet of plywood over 10 or so plastic milk crates--storage and support, handy! I stapled a linen skirt around the edge of the plywood, looked great.

For a long time that's what I used for a desk--plywood on top of file cabinets, with space in the middle for my knees.

When the BF and i first moved to Montreal our bed was a futon frame up on milk crates.... stacked 4 high! It was also bolted to the walls, but was seriously an accident waiting to happen. Also, the BF and I are each only about 5'4" (he claims to be 5'5") We literally had to use a step ladder to climb up. So romantic....heh.

Couldn't wait to move into a bigger place (we have since, don't worry!)

mmmm, nothing says 'rest and relaxation' like a board placed on top of a vast array of paperwork you should be completing....

that irony is not lost one me!

my back is hurting just looking at this setup - I can't even imagine sleeping on it for years.

As far as back pains, how is this different from a futon on the floor?
