Look! Floor on the Ceiling

atla-061208-woodceiling01.jpgThis past weekend, exploring the Dwell on Design Westside Home Tours, there was one home in particular that we really thought "Wow, we could live here." Like the others, it was modern and angular. What gave this house warmth, however, was the use of wood on the ceilings. Perhaps it resonates to a more primitive time when man lived outdoors sheltered by trees.

atla-061208-woodceiling02.jpgRay Kappe's home, another Dwell on Design treat, also had wood ceilings. Here, nestled among the trees, the wood brings an cozy treehouse feel to this home. With white ceilings, this house would've felt cold and clammy by comparison. It's someting to consider, if you have the option. Wood beams, a less expensive option, can bring also have the same effect of bringing a touch of warmth to an modern indoor space.

I absolutely love this:) It made me think back to a time where I had this online friend that was stuck in Sweden, the pictures she would post were so earthy and yet clean at the same time. Me thinks I'll do this to our ceiling, ya know... when we get a house lol

This takes me back a few years. My stepfather was in the salvage business (which sounds so much classier than junk man). The ceilings in several rooms of our very modest Florida Cracker-style bungalow, including my bedroom, were covered in oak hardwood flooring the salvaged from an old frat house being demolished. I can still remember him having to hand refinish this huge stack of boards. But it was gorgeous and gleaming when he got done. I loved that room. I love this one too.

That top photo looks amazing! I think it helps that everything else is bright white and lots of natural light as well. What a fun idea!
