We've seen framed art on bookshelves and Abby did a great post a while back on unconventional ways to display art but we've never seen framed art on a staircase. We think it's a great idea--find out why after the jump.

While the art dispayed in this picture is not quite our taste, we do love the idea of sectioning off the space with artwork. It's a great way to extend wall space in a kitchen where there's oftentimes little room left for personal touches. Taking this idea a step further, we'd like to see a chalk board or magnetic board or even a cork board attached to the railing. Since many bill paying stations and paperwork centers are operated out of the kitchen, the board would act as an extension of the "office area."

When you say "framed art" do you mean it has a frame? Half of the examples do not seem to have a frame. Maybe they're really thin.

I wonder how you disguise the back of the picture? It wouldn't look so nice on the other side.

ok, so how are they attached? I have such an ugly stair railing that could use some love, but I don't know how this would work. Oh, and mine is made of ugly black metal.

Most kitchens don't have staircases - so I don't know understand how your comments about "extending the kitchen" apply...
...and I agree w/ Rells - the backs would look terrible - and with kids & dogs I could see these getting knocked to the floor in no time.
Maybe it's cute for a magazine photoshoot, but it's just not practical, IMO.

Don't like it...adds to a cluttered feel. But by far the strangest thing I've ever seen is picture frames ON the stairs. One of my (ex)clients had two picture frames on each stair step....a whole mess of them on the landing...then more picture frames going up the next stairwell. I just thought what horrible clutter...until I wrapped my foot around one of those dang frames and took a header down the stairs with my vacuum! The client was angry that I didn't finish cleaning the house :-/
Not every design idea is a good one.
