This image from the April 2008 issue of Domino Magazine was intended to highlight some faux decorating accents, but we were more intrigued with the cabinet. We were drawn to "gray-washed" paint treatment. Gray has been really popular lately in decor, and it really makes the objects stand out...

in fact, just finished a kitchen reno with grey stained cabinets.... no photos yet :-(

This is exactly the same reason I tore that page out for my "future" home file. It's gorgeous. I was actually thinking of turning a crate and barrel red piece, similar to this, into this light grey/grey one instead. I love it!!! Lalaklass, post those gray kitchen cabinet pictures soon. I'd be curious to see that because I'm considering doing the same in our kitchen (mediterranean blue wall color in the background.)

my eye skipped all that clutter (coral? still? tortoise shells? so right now!?) and focused on those shelves too. very pretty, and nice doors too.

this is a modern take:

click on the black and white thumbnail at the bottom right hand of the page... a bedroom with long desk on a wall.. above are the dark painted shelves.. black or brown, not gray, with wood front edge. Very slick.

Hey guys - great post. First, Jayson Home and Garden (http://www.jaysonhome.com) had a gray-washed stand-alone cabinet on clearance, and it was very cool. I don't know if it's still there, but you might want to check it out. Also, Chicago's Urbanest had one too, which I included in one of my top 10 lists.

Finally, I've been living with gray walls for almost two years. Here is a link to my apartment tour:

I just painted gray the interior shelves of the white built-in buffet in the dining room. It really made the white wood pop.
Although I do like the final effect, gray is a really tricky color and color not being my thing, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. Sorry for the long post.

When design takes priority, the result is often strange closets.

BTW, although I like some of the objects in the Domino image, they are all so very trendy. It's almost like a joke. There's not one thing on the shelves that isn't hot right now. Do the people that live in that room have any of their own interests? That's what's really cool in design.

A few years back, I stained three large unfinished pine CD bookcases with water-based charcoal gray stain. The bookcases ended up with a "distressed" look, not through any effort on my part, but because that's how the stain dried. I was very happy with how the project turned out. Water-based stain is really easy to work with: you can wipe it on with a sponge or a rag, it doesn't smell, and it dries quickly.

I don't have gray cabinets, but I live with grey walls and love them. It took some convincing to get the husband on board, but he loves them now too. Guests are always surprised how calming and sharp they look!

The point of the Domino piece, btw, was that all those "natural" objet are faux (no animals/amphibians/reefs were harmed in the making of this article)... and no doubt the shot was propped to get as many examples in the shot as possible.
But I don't think it reads as clutter, imho.

I just spent 15 minutes going through my April 2008 edition of Domino. This is in the May 2008 copy. I was convinced that I was the victim of magazine piracy!
The page says April 2008 but it is in the May 2008 magazine. The editors didn't catch that!
I love the shelves. I have two walls of IVAR unfinished shelves that are waiting to be treated to some color.

I get that it's all faux, but still, faux 2006 trendy dead stuff.

Ah, Julianna, you are so au courant, you should work for Domino and set them straight!
