Look! Halfway Painted Stairs

111408halfwaystairs.jpgWe're a bit torn about this. We like the idea conceptually, demarcating one part of the house from the other. We also like the strong blue used here...it's vibrant and makes a statement without confidence. What we're not so sure is how it works together when the door is open as shown (perhaps if the door didn't match it would be less of an issue). It almost reminds us of water spilling down the stairway from the tub above. But maybe that's the point. What do you think?

Forget the stairs - I'm all about that tub in that attic all by itself. And I'm not even a bath person!

I think it would look better if the homeowner had carried the blue down the stairs and painted both sides of the door, but left the railing white.

I would have painted one more step blue. And then painted the top part of the door white with a sort of a wave of blue near the bottom of the door that spilled off the door and down the wall on the left. EXACTLY, what I visualized when you said "water spilling down the stairway".

The way that it is now is too harsh a break between the white and the blue.

The wave of blue on the bottom of the door and on the the wall would give you (*ME*) the sensation of water flowing down the stairs.

I *LOVE* the tub. Haven't had a bath since January 1978

Oooh! I like it. I'm assuming the door is white and distressed like the stairs when closed? And then you get this *pow* blue when you open the door. Lovely! Like a bright silky lining in side a tailored black jacket.

fade fade fade... I wish it was fades and distressed. Make it look like it is progressively becoming more modern and slick. Too hard of a line. It feels rushed.

Reminds me of Les Nesman on WKRP who used to put tape on the floor and pretend it was a wall.

I think it's great. But it definitely works because of the strong colours at hand here. If we were in the neutrals, it would be pointless. I also love it, because it takes real balls to do it.

I would give the bottom stairs a different color... maybe a tan or earthy color like water reaching the beach? I think the bottom stairs should stand out from the white wall as much as the top stairs do.

I doubt very much that there is plumbing coming up through the middle of that floor. It looks like a totally staged photo.

Stunning! Looks like a gateway to a magical land. And from what I see in the attic, it might just be.

I love the color change. I would love it more if the door were not there, since its clearly uncloseable from the bathroom side of the door (no handle and you would have to reach out over the stairs if there was one).

A door in the middle of a stairwell? So you have to walk up the stairs, step back down a few stairs so you can open the door all the way, then go back up the stairs....that is just dumb to put a door there...

If the bottom of the staircase was also freshly painted, I'd like it more.
Right now, it just kind of looks like they haven't gotten around to the bottom of the steps rather than an intentional choice.

I'm kind of with PaintItBright in thinking that it's a wonderful POW when you open the door, and I'm kind of with OnlyMe in thinking that I'd like to see fresh paint on the lower steps. I would like those lower steps to be some insanely shiny glossy white on those.
