The hanging hearts on the ceiling is the sweetest idea. I better get started now if I want to try anything like that-my boyfriend and I have been together for over 3,300 days!

Getting a man out of laundry bankruptcy is the first wrong step on a long, rocky road. Give him a gift certificate to a wash and fold service if you must, but don't start bailing him out of his inability to be a responsible adult, particularly as a sign of loving devotion.

I hope there aren't 579 holes in the ceiling. The hearts are sweet, but the holes would peeve me.

Guess that's why I won't be getting anything for Valentines this year.....

i once made a little diorama of the scene at our first kiss. complete with beach background, sun setting and cut outs of us.

I can't even look at that. It's sending chills down my spine.

Don't get me wrong, it is sweet. But I just can't...

Sweet, but a little too creepy for me. I prefer Carter Oosterhouse to Romeo Montague. Know your way around a tool box and how to make something with a dovetail joint and I'm all yours.

Way too creepy for me. Completely reminiscent of that horrific scene (one of many) in the movie "Seven" where there are all the air fresheners hanging over the single bed . . . .

I wrote 'i love you' in different languages on post-its. I then put them up in one room (the bathroom) and when he opened the door, he was shocked. It filled up the entire space (even the shower). Great sweet surprise.

I did this for Christmas rather than Valentine's Day - I recorded an album of covers for my man. He's a music graduate, who still writes and sings himself; when I was living in his country over the summer, we didn't have access to a piano where I could show off my skills; and we now conduct a long-distance relationship. I thought the CD would be a sweet way for him to listen to me when I'm not otherwise around. It was really simply to do - like many mp3 players, mine has a little in-built microphone, which I then put on to my computer and then burnt to CD - though the actual songs took some preparation. I also took time over the choice of songs, so that they'd be significant for one reason or another (not necessarily for the reasons you'd think - we once had an enormous argument over the lyrics to Simon and Garfunkel's "At the Zoo", so I recorded a version of that with MY lyrics).

I'm with Kell. If I came home and the ceiling had turned into corkboard my first thought would not be that it was sweet. . .

i've always had a vday tradition of little money ($10-$25) and something handmade. the handmade has ranged from dinner to cookies to a card. this year, i'm making rocky road (a childhood treat of my husband's) and giving him a red union suit that i'm considering embroidering a little heart on somewhere...

These look taped, cranky pants-es!! No ceilings were harmed in the making of this valentine...

It's a little stalkerish. I think coming home to those creepy hearts would be the end of the relationship for me. Yes, I have a cold, black stone where my heart should be.

Reminds me of an art school project I once made -- a black macrame arch that fit in a doorway with a rainbow of stuffed felt hearts attached to the ends of each fringe string! Mine hung as one unit, though -- much easier to put up or take down. (I got an A and it was accepted for a juried show ANDI swapped it with a silversmith for some custom jewelry, so all in all worth the effort.)

But this version? too much effort for too little payoff, and the cleanup would be annoying.

Valentines Day = chocolate -- it's simple!

wow, with all these negative responses, no wonder so many guys think they have to buy something shiny versus giving something thoughtful....

I think it's a lovely gesture, one that required a lot more creativity, thought, and time that clicking 'buy' on a website. I think the person is lucky indeed to have a partner who felt that acknowledging their love and relationship was important enough to make this effort.

Hmm we tend not to do anything on Valentine's day as our anniversary is just a few weeks before. I never quite know what kinds of things I will get but they are always sweet. One year I did get a homemade valentine that made laugh and go "awww" all at the same time.

I am thinking of making homemade chocolate chip cookies in a heart shape for my sweetie this year.

Wow, some cranky people on AT should be getting a box of stale chocolates for Valentine's Day! It's sweet and looks like it's been done with tape, so no one's making Swiss cheese out of the ceiling. Helping someone with a massive task (like accumulated laundry) is a great idea too-- anything where you put in time and effort to make someone happy is a thoughtful gift, not a slipperly slope to spending your life as laundry slave.

Coming to AT is turning into a major buzzkill lately... I come here to be inspired, not see people's creative ideas be put down as nastily as possible!

My ideas so far include candy kisses and origami since I'm broke and can't afford to buy anything, except sharp cheese to make him his favorite panko mac and cheese (thank you alton brown). See, he just moved into a new office where he looks out onto a small forest and a brick wall that he's sprinkled bird food on for the local Steller's Jays. He keeps talking about getting a bird feeder or bird house, so I'm going to make one out of construction paper and fill it with kisses to put on the wall and put origami hearts and hang them on the trees outside his window.

Fantastic Idea and completely unexpected. Last year my boyfriend gave me a small scrapbook (two pictures/page) he cut out pictures and created a short comic strip of us with bubble thoughts. it was sweet, funny and I continue to enjoy it to this day. I have written love letters to him, made him a music CD of songs of bands we went to see and created a small collage of pictures using the concert ticket stubs that we attended as frame mats. This year I plan to have the King of my Heart at home where he will be presented with a homemade crown, massage and a soaking bath.

My husband wrote me a sweet little poem when we were dating. I still smile when I think about it. (Same smile as when I get flowers, btw.)

Today, similarly inspired, I wrote a design-themed Valentine's poem of my own for anyone who cares to read it.
