Look! High Open Shelf

082008_highshelf.jpgIf you're tired of your plain Jane boxy apartment with very little character, consider this option: install a floating shelf about a 2-3 ft from the ceiling to display framed photos, art, collectibles, and books. We love the airy look of this predominantly white room (even with a standard height ceiling), and the shelf adds personality and some extra storage space as well.

Hey! What's wrong with being plain Jane?

I've been wanting to put in something like this for my cat as an "upper deck." How hard is it to install nice shelves like this?

Awesome idea. This would really work in my kid's room. I've never done this before...any tips on where to find a shelf like this? Ikea?

I really love this idea!

Yes Danze, Ikea has shelves like this. I believe in the Lack series.

My Sis' neighbor made shelves up high on the walls like this for their baby boy's room wrapping around all 4 walls - They did a farm theme for his room and the shelf was Barn Red with all kinds of cows, sheep and toy tractors, etc. on the shelf - they even made a switchplate cover in the shape of a barn with a farmer and cow handpainted on it.

If you'll be storing collectables up there, make sure that they will be properly lit. I had to swap out the lighting in my kitchen so I could display thing on top of my cabinets. Admittely, I have have 11 foot ceilings, so the problem was significant, but it is worth thinking about even in standard height rooms.

I like the high shelf. Saw one for the first time several years ago at a restaurant. They had plants and stuff up there.

it's not floating, but is installed one over my bedroom doorway that wraps around into the hallway. it's definitely saved a lot floor space for me. and has given my space something a little more unusual.
