Look! Hooks Under Console Shelf

090908_console.jpgOK, so the radiator underneath this shelf is making us a wee bit nervous, but the idea of installing hooks underneath a landing strip shelf is a pretty neat idea to store short jackets, bags, leashes, and maybe even keys if you don't have a bowl on top to hold them. What do you think?

why would a shelf over a radiator make you nervous? People put rad-covers on all the time! this is a great idea. I love the red gollashes.

It's not as if Southern Californians run their radiators year round. But I think I'd have put the shelf level with the top of the wainscotting, and made it flush with the corner.

revolution9: I think it's the hanging items touching the hot radiator that makes her nervous.

last year, i screwed in several hooks underneath the floating shelf by my front door. i didnt have room for an actual table so i hang keys there, gloves in winter, small bags, etc. I wouldn't hang coats or hoodies there because that to me looks junkie, but i like that you cant really see the smaller items like keys when you enter.

if your rad is running hot enough to start a fire, then I'd turn your rad down. Plus, aren't you in California? If you were in Winter-towne USA, then I'd be more concerned.

I like! I probably wouldn't hang anything under there though during the winter (just in case).

Being from the cold Canadian north, I have never encountered a radiator that was warm enough to set things on fire! If it was it would discolour the wainscoting. Besides, they are the best place to dry wet socks!

i have never in my life seen a radiator hot enough to cause a fire ... like the simple solution.

I wonder if a rad has ever caused a fire?? That's how my house was heated growing up and we never had issues... That'd be the prefect place to warm mittens and scarves in the winter!

No, fire but steam radiators spew water (if the valve is left open). Plus, the rapid change in temperature can dry out leather shoes. But I think its dead on for things that I'd normally let dry on a radiator (ie mittens).

It's not electric. I don't think any fires can start from a steam radiator. You don't dry stuff on an electric heater or a wood or coal stove. Steam rad, yes.

Quite an excellent place to dry off wet jackets and shoes on a rainy day. I'm almost sad that my apartment is electric only.

I've lived with radiators for years in a really cold climate. They don't set things on fire. There's no flame or electricity, it's just a big hunk of metal with hot water or steam inside. It's a great place to dry wool socks.
